Trial
opens for collaborators
The
trial of 49 people on charges of collaborating with Israel opened at a
military court on Wednesday, marking the 33rd batch of such hearings.
If found guilty, the defendants, who are mostly members of Israels
now-defunct proxy militia, face various imprisonment terms and fines.
The verdicts and sentences, which can be appealed at the Military Supreme Court,
were expected to be handed down around midnight.
The court, headed by Brigadier Maher Safieddine, has sentenced more than 1,100
people to jail terms of up to 15 years since the trials of collaborators began
on June 5.
Out of 2,500 Israeli agents, some 2,200 have surrendered to Lebanese
authorities or were captured after Israel withdrew.
