Israeli-allied
militia spy chief sentenced to death
The former head of the
militias intelligence wing in Bint Jbeil has been sentenced to death by the
Military Tribunal for working against the resistance.
Kamal Fayyad, who fled Lebanon when Israel ended its occupation of the
south last May, was convicted in absentia of weaving intrigues for the
Israeli enemy and its agents and providing them with information
about the resistance.
Fayyad, who has moved to the US state of Michigan, was reportedly badly beaten
in January by Lebanese seeking revenge for his activities in the South.
In sentences handed down late Friday and posted on a noticeboard Saturday, the
court meted out prison terms ranging from six months to 15 years to 23
collaborators.
The court also imposed fines of LL400,000 on most of the defendants. A woman who
visited Israel received a sentence of one month in prison and a fine of
LL1 million.
The court, whose verdicts cannot be appealed, has sentenced more than 2,300
people to jail terms of up to 25 years since Israels withdrawal from
Lebanon. Hundreds more are awaiting trial.
At least 18 collaborators have been sentenced to death in absentia for killing
resistance fighters.
