Israel
collaboration convictions continue
A military court convicted
12 people of collaboration and contact with Israel during its occupation
of south Lebanon and sentenced them to prison terms ranging from three weeks to
life.
The verdicts and sentences, handed down late Monday, were posted on the
courts bulletin board early Tuesday. The court, whose rulings cannot be
appealed, dropped charges against five other defendants for lack of evidence.
The court sentenced Faris Qassis in absentia to life in prison with hard labor
for working with a security branch of the former Israeli-allied South
Lebanon Army militia and torturing a Lebanese man after kidnapping him in the
former Israeli-occupied zone.
Two brothers were also sentenced in absentia to 15 years in jail and fined LL2
million each for joining the SLA.
The court sentenced one defendant to seven years in prison for collaborating
with the Israeli military police and another defendant to one year
in jail for serving with the SLA.
Four defendants received six-month prison terms for joining the militia, while
another three were sentenced to three weeks in jail for entering Israel,
according to the court statement.
Another defendant was fined LL 500,000 for visiting Israel.
