Collaborators chief of staff surrenders
Karamallah
Said, the chief of staff of the Israeli-proxy South Lebanon Army militia who
fled to Israel during the Israeli withdrawal a year ago, crossed the border
into Lebanon Friday and handed himself over to Lebanese authorities.
Said is the most senior ranking militia officer to have surrendered to the
authorities.
He arrived at the border crossing at Ras Naqoura on the coast at 11am. He was
received by UNIFIL peacekeepers manning a post at the border crossing and was
almost immediately collected by Lebanese soldiers.
Originally a Lebanese Army officer, Said joined the Marjayoun-based militia of
Saad Haddad in 1976 when the army split and collapsed in the South during the
early stages of the civil war. He was appointed the militia chief of staff in
the early 1990s and was responsible for logistics and administration. His family
returned to Lebanon recently.
