Chief of staff says military not opposed
to unilateral pullout from the south
(3)
Israeli Chief of Staff General Shaul Mofaz
said on Wednesday that the military does not necessarily oppose a unilateral
troop pullout from Lebanon and is preparing to withdraw its forces by next
summer.
He suggested that the military had changed its long-standing opposition to unilaterally withdrawing from the zone.
The situation has changed, Mofaz told reporters during a visit to Israels northern border. It would be wrong to stick to recommendations that held true for another situation.
Mofaz said proposals for a withdrawal would be presented to Barak later this month for approval.
Barak has not said what he would do if an agreement with Syria is not reached by July, but has reiterated on several occasions that the withdrawal will take place by next summer.
Israel TV said the army withdrawal plans were designed with a security agreement in mind, but were flexible enough to accommodate a unilateral withdrawal.
Lebanese parties and forces: backing the
Resistance until occupation is expelled and Palestinians return to their
homeland
(4)
Lebanese parties and forces stressed that the
conflict with the Israeli occupation will not be over the minute the
occupation withdraws from south Lebanon and the western Beqaa.
A communiqué issued after the parties' meetings said "Israel" must withdraw to the June 4, 1967 lines and allow the Arab Palestinian people to return to all its land: Palestine.
"The current situation requires ignoring the personal or narrow calculations, boosting internal unity, enhancing ties with sisterly Syria, backing the Resistance, and confronting all attempts to create internal unrest and harm the internal stability through some explosions here or there, the communiqué read.
The occupation's talk about withdrawal from south Lebanon is evil lurking Lebanon and Syria, it added, underlining the need to support the Resistance until the occupation is expelled and the problem of the Palestinian people is solved by allowing them to return to their homeland, Palestine.
