Hizbullah on the ‘verge of victory’ Group says ignore “Israeli” statements…(1)
The leader of Hizbullah warned the government on Sunday against being misled by foreign politicians “at a time when victory is at hand.” He advised that “Israeli” statements about a potential withdrawal from the south be disregarded. “We shouldn’t retreat because we are close to defeating the enemy’s army in the south and the Western Beqaa,” said Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hizbullah’s secretary-general.

He said that “the government must preserve the strong position Lebanon has reached by keeping distant from strife and being confident about victory instead of being fooled by the lies and illusions” which he said were spread by President Clinton, Ehud Barak, the “Israeli” premier and David Satterfield, the US Ambassador to Lebanon.

Nasrallah was speaking during a Hizbullah ceremony in Haret Hreik honoring wounded or imprisoned party members.

On Sunday “Israel” radio reported that Shaul Mofaz, chief of staff, as saying that arrangements have been made in preparation for a withdrawal from the south.

Mofaz reportedly said “Israel” would study other options in case it failed to reach a conclusive agreement on a date for the withdrawal. Mofaz warned of the dangerous consequences of a withdrawal without an agreement but did not say it was “impossible.”

Nasrallah said the situation called for more persistence because the enemy’s defeat was “imminent.”

He said both government and society played a role in preserving the resistance’s achievements and must not hesitate to continue doing so.

“We must preserve this accomplishment through internal union and solidarity because we are going through one of the most critical stages” of our existence, Nasrallah said.

“Lebanon is in a strong and highly valuable position so do not misuse it or jump ahead to other phases before we are ready,” he said. “We should be stronger and more determined because this situation has not been given to us gratuitously”.
