Foreign Minister Herve de Charette visited Hizbullah's Secretary General
his Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah during the former's visit to Lebanon
a few days ago. The meeting was not publicized due to the French side's
wish.
De Charette discussed with Sayyed Nasrallah the general situation. He expressed an estimation of "little optimism" on the outcome of the current efforts to ripen a quick settlement in the region. He stressed his country's desire and effort to play a real role in this regard.
"The French former minister asked about Hizbullah's position on several current affairs related to the settlement process and raised the traditional question on Hizbullah's stand following the Israeli withdrawal from the south" the sources said, adding that de Charette tried to probe whether Hizbullah will continue its resistance if "Israel" withdraws from south Lebanon but maintains the occupation of the Golan Heights.
The sources did not state whether de Charette, being envoy of French president Jacques Chirac, had relayed any specific proposals to Sayyed Nasrallah on the possibility of France's playing a field role in the south in case of an Israeli withdrawal.
