Introduction
Hizbullah has announced that it carried out 121 resistance operations
against Israeli occupation troops in southern Lebanon last month. It,
also, said Israel intensified its air attacks on the south during the
same period.
However, it was reported that the Israeli allied militia in Hasbaya had accused the occupation itself of planting and detonating several bombs last Monday and Tuesday. The occupations goal is to indicate that the militia has become helpless due to the resistances human and security penetration of the militia.
HIZBULLAH OUTLINES THE ISRAELI AGGRESSIONS
IN SOUTH LEBANON

Hizbullah confirmed that Israel has stepped up its air raids on
southern Lebanon. In October, the group which spearheads resistance activities
in the south said, some 37 percent of all attacks on Lebanon were carried
out by the Israeli air force, compared with about 25 percent in September.
Israel has also been targeting civilian areas. Two civilians were injured
in Qabrikha, one seriously by heavy Israeli shelling, which also wounded
a child in the front-line village of Kfar Joz. One civilian was hurt in
Israeli shelling on the Nabatieh village of Kfar Tibneet, while four
were wounded in neighboring Froun. Four Lebanese were also hurt when Israel
indiscriminately attacked civilian neighborhoods in Arab Salim. Two children
were killed by a cluster bomb left behind by Israeli troops in the Western
Beqaa. Hizbullah also said three civilians were injured by Israeli shelling
on the Hamra crossing point in southern Lebanon last week. Meanwhile, the
group said it carried out 121 operations against occupation forces. The
most successful attacks took place in the Rihan outpost, where Israel
admitted that two Israeli soldiers from the elite Golani brigade, were
injured. Israel television also unveiled that the so-called head of liaison
unit in the south, Beni Geinz, was in the convoy that came under Hizbullah
attack, raising suspicion in Israel that Hizbullah may have known beforehand
of the top officer's presence in Rihan. Hizbullah also said two Mirkava
tanks accidentally collided, injuring two occupation troops.
One Israeli soldier, the group said, was also injured when a mortar bomb he was preparing to launch exploded prematurely. Hizbullah's monthly report also stressed, Israel intensified its searches of occupied villages and towns. Ainata remains under siege and dozens of civilians have been detained for questioning. A young woman, Fatima was tortured under interrogation, and had to be transported to a hospital in Sidon for treatment. Her sister is reportedly dying inside the occupied zone, but Israeli forces will not allow her out for treatment. The girls' parents were detained after Fatima received extensive media attention.
Resistance groups notch up operations record
(2)
The resistance staged 280 attacks in October, UNIFIL said on Thursday,
its highest number ever in a one-month period.
Almost all were carried out by Hizbullah and Amal, with a handful by
the multi-faith Lebanese Resistance Brigades, a couple by the Communist-led
National Resistance Movement and one by Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
The monthly figures have climbed steadily since a brief lull in July:
August recorded 190 attacks and September 220.
UNIFIL spokesman Timur Goksel said that there were two main reasons behind the dramatic increase.
Hizbullah is determined to show that the Israeli air attacks arent working and that theyre continuing firing, he told The Daily Star. The other reason is that there has been an increase in minor attacks by Amal.
Amal, which returned to the frontline two months ago, accounted for around half the total in October, most of them routine mortar attacks of one or two rounds each.
Hizbullah claimed responsibility for 121 operations.
The Israelis have begun responding to resistance operations with air strikes in a bid to minimize troop casualties. Israeli soldiers are rarely seen outside their reinforced concrete bunkers, providing the resistance with fewer targets. This explains why the months casualty figures were relatively low, despite the large amount of ordnance flying around. Three SLA* militiamen were killed and three wounded. Three Israeli soldiers were wounded, along with one Hizbullah fighter and six civilians.
Hizbullah was responsible for the qualitative assaults: an attack on an Israeli armored convoy at the entrance of the Rihan outpost on Oct. 7 that wounded two soldiers; a roadside-bomb ambush just 100 meters from the entrance to Beaufort Castle on Oct. 27; and a bombing beside the Kfar Houna outpost last Friday in which an SLA militiaman was killed.
The Jihad operation provoked unfounded speculation that the group was about to become an active player in the south. But the attack a couple of mortar rounds fired at the Soweida and Tohorra posts near Nabatieh was more likely intended to mark the fourth anniversary of the assassination of the groups founder, Fathi Shekaki, in Malta by Israeli agents. Commemorating Shekakis killing was the motive for the last Jihad attack in the south on Oct. 24, 1997, when three members of the group were killed in a clash with Israeli troops in Wadi Slouqi.
The corpses were left in the wadi for eight months until UNIFIL was given permission by the Israelis to remove them.
Security sources said that the two most significant developments on the ground in October were the increased use of the 107mm short-range Katyusha rocket and the return to roadside bomb ambushes. The latter suggests that Hizbullah has been able to replenish its stockpiles of bombs inside the zone, the sources said. However, bombs continue to be uncovered by the occupation forces. Two were unearthed near Sojod this week, as were three others at Zimraya. Two militiamen were killed by a roadside bomb at the Zimraya crossing on Sept. 1, the first such assault in the area.
Militia accuses occupation of planting bombs
in Zimraya

A number of small unclaimed bombs went off last Monday and Tuesday.
As the Lebanese media were puzzled by the fact that nobody claimed responsibility
for the bombs, it was reported today (yesterday) that the occupation's
proxy militia in Hasbaya accused the occupation itself of planting the
bombs.
The occupation is planting the bombs to indicate that the militia has become more helpless due to the resistance's human and security penetration of the militia, the reports said.
The reports said the occupation army has a definite interest in showing
a state of deep insecurity and instability in that area to indicate that
the militia has collapsed and is no longer able to control things on the
ground.
"Therefore, the occupation must pull out from this area, no matter
what the militia's opinion is, in order to prevent things from deteriorating
and reaching what happened in Jezzine prior to the withdrawal from that
area as Hizbullah was successful in eliminating most of the militia's cadres
and commanders without the occupation's being able to reach any measure
to stop the Resistance's military supplies," the reports added.
The resistance's achievements in Jezzine has drawn a picture of a defeated occupation army that escapes, along with its militia, under the Resistance's blows.
