"Israeli" warplanes pound the south, injuring civilians
"Tensions in the south escalated Sunday night as "Israeli" artillery
and warplanes pounded the area facing the western sector of the occupation
zone shortly after the resistance fired mortar rounds across the border
into western Galilee".
"The resistance shelling came in response to the wounding hours earlier of at least two civilians when "Israeli" troops fired guided missiles into the village of Qabrikha on the edge of the central sector.
"Claiming responsibility for the afternoon missile attack, "Israel" ordered residents of northern Galilee into shelters Sunday night in anticipation of a retaliatory cross-border strike by the resistance.
"The resistance, almost certainly Hizbullah guerrillas, dropped several 120mm mortar rounds just south of the border into western Galilee. "Israeli" warplanes raided wadis near Yater and Qlayleh, southeast of Tyre. There were no reports of casualties in the evening fighting.
"The resistance shelling of the border is a customary response when Lebanese civilians are wounded and serves as a warning to the "Israeli" Army. Lebanese civilian fatalities usually provoke Katyusha attacks against "Israeli" settlements".
"Three missiles were fired into Qabrikha in the missile attack with one striking a house and wounding Lamia Khamas, 37, and Maryam Fahda, 8. The two casualties were taken to Tibnine hospital for treatment. Reports that two men were also injured in the attack could not be immediately confirmed.
The other two missiles exploded harmlessly near a cemetery and in a wadi on the edge of the village".
"The "Israeli" Army admitted responsibility for the attack in an official communiqué".
"Details of the missile involved were not immediately available. The attack, however, bore all the hallmarks of several previous missile assaults in the area attributed to a family of three new anti-tank missiles the "Israelis" have been testing in the occupation zone for over a year".
""Israeli" warplanes staged a raid against a wadi between Chaitieh and Jabal Botom Saturday, dropping eight bombs" (1)
"However Major-General Gabi Ashkenazi of the Northern Command issued instructions late Sunday afternoon ordering all the region's residents to go into the shelters. Hundreds of thousands of people, including those of Kiryat Shmonah, spent an anxious night in security rooms and bomb shelters as they waited for the dreaded but familiar shriek of Katyusha rockets".
"Many residents left the area, preferring to spend the night with relatives and friends in other parts of the country. The region's hotels were full, and holiday makers were relocated to guest houses on the Golan or in the more southerly parts of the Galilee, beyond Hizbullah range".
""Israeli" sources said they hoped that the Hizbullah would not escalate the situation any further.
"This is the second time within a month that the Galilee has been shelled
from South Lebanon. The last time was on election night, when they shelled
"Israel" in retaliation for the death of Lebanese civilians killed by an
IDF* missile. The IDF decision on that occasion not to order the population
into
the shelters was severely criticized."
"Premier-elect Barak has already announced that he wishes to withdraw "Israeli" troops from Lebanon within a year. The latest fighting is another reminder that this may prove more difficult then he imagines" (2)
