Thursday 20-2000:
Militiaman flees zone; rebellion in occupied
Shibaa…(1)
"Reports from the occupied zone
said there was a rebellion in the ranks of agent Lahd's militia especially in
the town of Shibaa.
"Around
10 militiamen refused to go to their military posts while others burned their
uniforms, the reports said, adding that the collaborators' command had to
threaten to arrest some of the militiamen after it had summoned them to its
Zoghleh outpost.
"The
reports affirmed that Rafiq Saab, one of the militiamen, was able to flee Shibaa
and reach the liberated areas through the mountainous roads.
"A
state of concern and fear prevails in Shibaa as residents expect the occupation
command to take collective revengeful measures against them", the reports
concluded.
Former prisoner dies of disease sustained during
imprisonment in occupation prisons…(2)
"Hizbullah
proudly announced the death of freed prisoner Martyr Mahdi Abdel-Hassan Ibrahim
who died of disease sustained during his imprisonment in the "Israeli"
notorious al-Khiam detention center as a result of the physical and
psychological torture he was subjected to at the hands of the
"Israeli" occupation and its collaborators.
"Ibrahim
was born in 1968, married, joined IR in 1987, worked in the Islamic Health
Society's Civil Defense Department.
"He
was detained by the "Israeli" occupation forces on February 10, 1988
from his house in occupied al-Khiam and released on March 30, 1993 due to the
deterioration of his condition as a result of the brutal torture he was
subjected to and that had him sustain chronic diseases of which he died in Italy
where he was being treated on Wednesday January 18, 2000.
"As
we draw the world's attention to the suffering and brutality that our brothers
are being subjected to in the "Israeli" and Lahdi detention centers in
Lebanon and occupied Palestine, we call on the human rights' groups to exert the
maximum pressures on the Zionist enemy to halt its arbitrary measures against
the detainees that must be released immediately," a Hizbullah communiqué
read.
NO INDICATIONS OF "ISRAELI" WITHDRAWAL FROM
SOUTH LEBANON: UN, HIZBOLLAH…(3)
"The United Nations peace-keeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, has no
reason to believe "Israel" is about to withdraw its occupation forces
from the south. UNIFIL spokesman Timor Goksel who met Hizbullah's official in
the south, Sheikh Nabil Qawook, today (yesterday) said "Israel's"
allied militia retreat from the Kfar Houna post last week is not related to a
pledge by Prime Minister Ehud Barak to withdraw his forces from Lebanon by July.
Sheikh Qawook warned that "Israel" is actually fortifying some of its
posts in the region. There has been speculation the "Israeli"-backed
militia retreat from Kfar Houna may be related to an "Israeli" plan to
pullout occupation troops from Lebanon in the next six months".
Better late than never: village takes joy in end of
occupation…(4)
When Sraireh Mukhtar Salim Kiwan locked the swing
gate behind him and returned the key to the SLA* militiaman in the adjacent Kfar
Houna outpost last Wednesday, he little imagined that it would be the last time
he would ever have to perform the onerous chore.
The next morning, residents of the Jezzine village arrived at the gate to
discover the outpost in ruins and the SLA gone. “It was as if we’d been in
jail and now we’re free,” said Kiwan.
Sraireh, the only Druze village in the district, is tucked among the eastern
folds of Jabal Abu Rashed, 13 kilometers southeast of Jezzine.
For over 19 years, the village remained largely forgotten as the 100-odd
residents, most of them members of the Kiwan clan, quietly tended their olive
groves, ignoring the battles between the resistance and the occupation forces
among the surrounding craggy hills and wadis.
The roads running north into the western Beqaa and east toward Hasbaya have
remained blocked by earthen embankments and land mines since 1985. The
village’s only lifeline to the outside world was via a narrow, crumbling road
that terminated at a swing gate beside the Kfar Houna position, overlooking the
main route between Jezzine and Marjeyoun.
For the residents of Sraireh, the simple red- and white-painted gate became
their greatest source of irritation and a symbol of the strictures imposed by
the occupation. “It was our main problem,” said Kiwan. “Every time we
wanted to leave the village we had to go up and fetch the key from the
militiamen in the outpost, unlock the gate, drive the car through, lock the gate
and return the key.”
The SLA’s decision to abandon the Kfar Houna outpost and redeploy to Aramta, 4
kilometers to the south, came as a complete surprise to the residents of
Sraireh. The move also freed the nearby hamlet of Qotrani, a tiny cluster of
single-story stone buildings.
“When we saw the militia had left, we smashed the lock and jammed the gate
open,” said Kiwan.
It is perhaps illustrative of Sraireh’s seclusion that the most irksome
element of occupation for the residents was the hassle of having to open and
close a gate. Nearby villages in Iqleem al-Toffah and the western Beqaa suffer
regular infrastructure damage and the occasional loss of life from the daily
bouts of violence. But other than damage to two houses from a mortar shell in
1994, Sraireh has emerged from the occupation remarkably unscathed.
“Our village was stuck in the middle of the fighting. The shells always flew
over our heads in both directions,” said Khalil Kiwan, the village’s school
teacher.
"The SLA once manned a position in an old quarry
at the entrance of the village, but the post was abandoned in 1987, after which
the occupation forces were rarely seen
“We never saw them here. They were too scared to come as we are far from the
safety of their positions,” said resident Wael Kiwan.
Sraireh’s location at the hub of routes between the western Beqaa, Hasbaya and
Jezzine once helped it attract dozens of students from neighboring villages.
Today, although the village school can seat 500 pupils, only one student attends
class, 6-year-old Maher Kiwan.
Khalil Kiwan said construction on the present school finished in 1995 in
anticipation of the occupation ending and the school filling with pupils.
Asked if he missed having friends at the school, Maher gave a doleful nod of the
head and continued scribbling his lessons on the chalk board.
"Israeli" Aggressions…(5)
The "Israeli" occupying troops launched the
following aggressions:
15:50, three missiles hit the outskirts of Haddatha
town.
Between 16:10 and 18:00, Qaissieh Valley was
bombarded by nine 155mm missiles.
Military Operations…(6)
The IR team of martyrs Ali Souli and Assaad Tabaja
attacked, at 15:55, an "Israeli" engineering force as it was beefing
up Taibeh outpost with the rocket-propelled grenades. Direct and certain hits
were scored, the mujahedeen reported.
