President Arafat's Speech
On the occasion of the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe)
(Verses from the Holy Quran)
Beloved ones, the strong Palestinian people who are promised with triumph and return. Brothers in homeland which we is being liberated by inches, and in Diaspora which took our youths but failed to take the future and hope.
Free Palestinians, the strifers, here is a half a century of wounds and pains applied to our modern history creating a circle of fire before views of our planet of humanity. The Nakba has taken us out of our homes and dispersed our people in various lands. Historians have never found a people other than ours which was subjected to oppression. Yet, our people remain capable and struggling and overcoming oppression to head towards Jerusalem, the capital of sole and homeland. Our people will steadfast forever.
A lot have been said about the first generation of Nakba. More than one party made bets on the extinction of this generation at the train station and that a new generation which is lost in oblivion will be born. Yet, our people has made the miracle of humanity through leaving the blackout of death alive. This is the promise of God.
(Verses from the Holy Quran and Bible)
Yes our brothers, the flame of faith which remains lighted in the spirit of this people. The faith in righteousness and return and establishing the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. This flame which confirms our life, has been responded to by the world. (Verses from the Quran).
An overall look to the international view, through years of first Nakba, and a look to the modern international view, reveal how much water flew in Palestine rivers and how the international position has been developed. We are not mere refugees who ask for mercy and charity. But, we are a great people belonging to a great nation. We are knocking the dark container, yet, the world has no other choice except to listen. We are not satisfied with the world’s listenings since we have rights and obligations and it is time for harvest.
Brothers and sisters,
The blood fall by our bodies for the sake of Palestine was not able to awake the world if our cause is not fair. It is the same cause which is carried by doves of peace. The occupiers exerted all their utmost and what can be done by any colonialist to exclude the face of Palestine and to deny the existence of Palestinian people. They made their slogan “a land without a people to a people without homeland”. Yet, the mighty people, these Palestinians used to emerge from the heart of land and from the heart of suffering and pain, from the twisted space and harshness of time with olives, oranges and jasmine, and with the stitch of embroidery, the joy of happiness and books of the historian. Before and after that and with the historic pertinacity and the iron will to remain existing, and when the people remain, despite all the wishes to have it dead and extinct, the others have only to realize its existence with all the consequent rights.
Since the outset, we addressed the world with the rifle and the olive branch. We have not fought for the sake of fighting, but for the sake of peace. Our identification to peace is as it was approved by the modern humanity that peoples should live in their homelands to construct their lives and set the base for their future without fear, anxiety and feelings of oppression. What we are asking for is not a great matter for that purpose. We are not asking the moon. We want to turn over the first page of Nakba and forever, and that the expatriates will return to their homeland. Moreover, to construct our independent state on our land as all human beings do and to celebrate our eternal capital, Jerusalem.. the land where Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven and the place which observed Jesus’ birth. This tortured and injured capital which peace was one of its names. It is time for it to enjoy peace. The fair, genuine and comprehensive peace.
Beloved ones,
On the 50th anniversary of Nakba, we bow with respect and promise before dreams of our fathers and mothers whom some have passed away and others are sticking to the promise. We say the oath and promise are the same that we will not give up, give concession and will not retreat from the light of Palestine. It is an occasion which we confirm every time by saying to our people in camps and the near and far Diaspora that any right will not be wasted as long as there is a claimer for it. We are callers for rights and for us, the right of return is in the position of holy sites.
Here in homeland, despite geography and circumstances, we announce openly that homeland is more than a stone, a tree, a space and a sea. It is sovereignty and freedom and the entrance to the international web. We are not guests in this world, yet, we are partners in it. This partnership will not be achieved as long as we have no home as homelands where we enjoy reasons, symbols and signs of national sovereignty. It is as land which is blessed by God to the people. (Verses from the holy Quran).
On the 50th anniversary, we say to our prisoners and injured what they know that they are our injury and our honor. We will not give up, sleep and yield in relation to their cause. Who is thinking of a free state governed with the spirit of liberation and the right in freedom. Prisoners of freedom will remain for us a compass which shows the world that we are a free people and of a free nation. The chain is doomed to break. The noble martyrs, beloved by angels, are the most respected among us and are Palestine flags. They went for a mission and it is time for them to return to us. Their pure spirits are flying over us and over Jerusalem’s minarets, domes and churches.
(Verses from Quran).
Beloved ones,
We have a space under the sun. This place is the world’s navel and is the meaning of the world peace. We suffered enough oppression and we disobeyed injustice and doors of the world have been opened before use. We have and should maintain efforts of the last quarter of an hour. (Verses from Quran).
Promise the steadfasting people and the Palestinian people: triumph is coming and the Palestinian children will raise the Palestinian flag on Jerusalem’s minarets, churches and walls. (Verses from the Quran).
