GCMHP Signs a Cooperation Agreement with the European Commission
On 20 September 2000, Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj signed a cooperation agreement with the European Commission in Brussels. In the agreement, the EC agreed to partially fund GCMHP's Project for the Empowerment of Survivors of Human Rights Violations (HRV Project) for the next two years. The HRV Project, which started in 1994, provides therapeutic services for former Palestinian prisoners, who were subjected to torture in prison, and to their families. Also, it includes a variety of preventive activities aiming to stop torture and violence in Palestinian society. These activities include training staff in Palestinian security branches about issues of mental health and human rights. The Project also works to train qualified mental health professionals. In addition, the Project is active in raising public awareness about mental health, mental illness, and the effect of human rights violations on the mental wellbeing and capacity to cope with everyday life difficulties. |
