Palestine is a land that was occupied by Turkey at the beginning of this century. Between the two world wars it was occupied by Britain, and following World War II it was part of Jordan. Since 1967 it has been occupied by Israel. These photographs are not about politics but about a landscape that is regarded by millions as The Holy Land. Conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis is, in the long run, as self defeating as that between Siamese twins. The more both parties focus on their common heritage and the land that they share, the more they identify with this landscape instead of their ethnicity, the more likely they are to stop the nonsense and grow rich together. It is certainly in the best interest of foriegn powers to keep the two sides apart, for a polically united Levant would in short order become an ominously potent economic and polical power. |
