Birzeit Human Rights Action Project Press Release No. 2/99

CONTINUED PREVENTION OF LAWYER VISIT TO BIRZEIT UNIVERSITY
STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT
Iyad Habib Mohammad detained for 33 days without legal counsel

Birzeit—The Human Rights Action Project (HRAP) of Birzeit University is gravely concerned for the well being of student council president Iyad Habib Mohammad. Iyad was arrested by the Isreali General Security Services on 26 January 1999 on his way home from university. Since his arrest, Iyad has been denied access to the HRAP lawyer, Adv. Elia Theodory, through four consecutive prevention orders. Adv. Theodory was recently informed that a fifth prevention order was issued denying legal counsel until 4 March 1999, despite two legal petitions submitted to the Israeli High Court of Justice requesting lawyer visits.

The continued denial of legal counsel to Iyad Habib Mohammad raises fears as to his well-being and is in contravention of international laws stipulating the basic rights of all detainees. HRAP again asks the international community to add their voices in protest to the continued prevention of legal counsel and demand that Iyad’s legal process be conducted according to international norms.
