The dome at night, in its full glory. The design embodies common attributes of the three communities who administer the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and represents the glory of God enveloping the risen Christ. It consists of 12 rays of gold, representing the 12 Apostles. From each ray comes three streams of light, symbolising the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Light from the central skylight, as well as from artificial light sources, enhance the mother-of-pearl background to the dome, brightening as it ascends, sparkling with stars. The mother of pearl background evokes the Biblical description of the luminous cloud of the presence of God.
