OTHER CONFERENCES AND LECTURES

RIWAQ 'restoration' lecture

The RIWAQ cultural centre for popular archaeology held the '1st Conference for Restoration in Palestine' from June 3rd to 4th 1995. Organised in conjunction with several other local and international organisations, Birzeit faculty members from the Architectural Engineering Department made two presentations. Dr. Su'ad Al-Ameri chaired a discussion on public policy of restoration of the infrastructure, while department head Dr. Shadi Ghadban presented a paper on "The role of the Palestinian universities in the restoration process."


Public lecture series

The public lecture series continued this year with a series of lectures looking at "The role of folklore in protecting national culture," presented by Dr. Sharif Kana'neh and Abdul Latif al-Bargouthi; "Palestine: current situation and future vision," from the former Palestinian ambassador to Russia, Mr. Nabil Amru, and "Palestine in the French media," by Suleiman Zeghidur.


Cultural Studies and Philosophy Department

The Cultural Studies and Philosophy Department held a seminar on 8 June 1994 entitled "The Middle East after the end of the Cold War," with professor Fred Haliday from the University of London's International Relations Department.


The Continuing Education Department

The Continuing Education Department hosted Mohammed Qursh, a financial analysis specialist, who gave an economics seminar on "Changing the private companies into public companies," in October 1994.


Student Islamic Bloc

The student Islamic Bloc held a study day on 15 December 1994 to discuss Palestinian relations with Israel at this stage in the peace process, focussing on "The dangers of normalisation." Some members of faculty participated as well.
