Friday, November 2, 2001 Two weeks ago, Birzeit University had to suspend all its operations due to the incursion of Israeli occupation forces into Ramallah and the complete closure of the Ramallah-Birzeit road – the major road leading to the University. Until today, students, staff and faculty have not been able to reach the University, and all operations remain suspended. In case the situation does not change soon, the University will be considering alternative methods of teaching to resume its academic operations as soon as possible. Such contingency plans are being studied seriously by the University. It should be stressed that under no circumstance will the University allow the situation to prevent it from shedding its responsibilities in providing higher education opportunities to its students and the public at large. In the meantime, the University appeals for support from individuals and institutions involved in issues of higher education and/or in issues related to human rights and academic freedom.
