Birzeit University’s students and staff face more harassment May 5, 2001During the past five days, the Israeli occupation forces have been imposing a strict roadblock on the Ramallah-Birzeit road, searching cars, harassing people and causing a delay of more than an hour for commuters on their way to work or educational institutions. In the process, students and staff are reaching the University later than expected, and classes are starting between half an hour to an hour late, if at all. This is in violation of students’ rights to education, and should be abhored by all those who are concerned with the freedom of education. The roadblock and the delay is also affecting the daily lives of the thousands of residents in the 30 villages in the surrounding area, whose only road to Ramallah - a major commercial city - is the Ramallah-Birzeit road.
