The What Was New Archive
ARCHIVED LINKS NO.1
6 June - 9 July 1996
Compiled by the Birzeit Webmaster, webmaster@birzeit.edu.
- 9 July 1996 - PRESS RELEASE ADDED. A student has been put in
detention for a year, without charge or trial, by the Israeli Military
Authorities. This link will get you to the
story, released today.
- 6 July 1996 - SHORT UPDATE. For those interested in the student HTML
training mentioned in a couple of entries below, it finished today an
hour and a half ago (at 3.00pm)! The webmaster was very pleased to see that
60% of
the students could be categorised as "excellent". Work from the students
will soon be put on the web and the coming "New & Improved" Birzeit
& the World
Wide Web section will have a report on the training with links to the
sections of the website that the students worked on for their training
project. ANOTHER UPDATE. For those following the court case (see 25 &
26 June below), the General Prosecutor only signed the order last
Thursday, so the eight days begin from then. Stay tuned, as this is truly
a significant case to watch. ETA on the complete "New & Improved
Website" is about a fortnight from today, all things being equal.
- 3 July 1996 - Our phone, e-mail and fax lines have started working
again, a couple of weeks after some people stole some cables between the
University and Ramallah. Apparently, this not infrequent experience for
us is the result of a booming trade in copper wire, which is melted down
with gold to make jewellery. Mmmm. Please note that the major
website facelift promised in the announcement below from 25 June will be
delayed for maybe a couple of weeks after the intended deadline. This is
due to the delays caused by the lack of phones and a few other minor
technical difficulties. The wait will be worth it, we think, as we will
be rectifying a few of the errors (such as in link colours) that have
been kindly pointed out in comments to the webmaster. Thanks again. For
those interested in the student training mentioned in the website
anouncement of 25 June, we are on day three and the courses are going
well. This one course, of around 17 students - our first for students at
the university - will probably double the number of people who can HTML
in Palestine, as unbelievable as this may sound!
- 3 July 1996 - Many apologies for all of those who have tried to get
us in the last day or two and have had a "Node currently unreachable"
message. We are now alive. It seems that our webserver, Felafel, keeps
getting
tired and goes to sleep, powering itself down every few weeks. Having
rested, Felafel is now back on-line.
- 26 June 1996 - Check out the result of
today's hearing at the Palestinian High Court, mentioned in yesterday's
release (see below).
- 25 June 1996 - Check out this link
to tomorrow's press release, detailing a
significant court case to establish a legal precident in Palestine.
- 25 June 1996 - Please be notified that the Birzeit Website will
undergo a major facelift within the next fortnight. All our link colours
and backgrounds will be standardised, before the website gets
much larger and we lose all hope of this kind of maintainance! A few
surprises lie in wait for the discerning browser. As students are finishing
exams at the end of June, we are beginning training for them in
preparation for the summer WWW volunteer programme. As well as
encouraging students to produce their own home pages, they will be
cutting their HTML teeth on adding to the Birzeit Archives section of the
website and helping our various departments get on line. Stay tuned. In
the meantime, if you haven't already done so, check out A Personal Diary in the Palestine Archive section of our website,
for "on the ground" reports of some of the major events that have taken
place this year that you may have read about in our press releases. Three hyperlinks in one
sentence can't be wrong.
- 23 June 1996 - IMPORTANT NOTE - Please note that the
telephone lines between
Birzeit and Ramallah are currently down, making telephone calls, faxes
and e-mail impossible. Copper wire theives again, we are told! No word yet
as to when this service will be
resumed. You can contact the university in the meantime by e-mail via the
following
address: nparry@baraka.org Faxes
to the university can be sent via the Birzeit Board of Trustees building
on +972-2-995-4383.
- 23 June 1996 - The Birzeit Press Release
Archive section of the
Birzeit Archives was activated today, containing almost all of the press
releases
from the beginning of 1996, pending one last update in the next few days.
All press releases will be added to the archive at the
same time they are sent out as e-mail on the Internet, making this the
most reliable source of Birzeit press releases.
- 21 June 1996 - The English language Jerusalem Post and
Jerusalem Times newspapers
featured the Birzeit Website today, both articles with pictures.
- 16 June 1996 - This "What's New" page was introduced, along with
information about events going on in Palestine, currently the Palestine International Festival 1996.
- 13 June 1996 - We press released the various
Palestine-relevant newsgroups and friends on our e-mail mailing lists, announcing our website launch.
- 11 June 1996 - We began the process of announcing our presence on the Internet, registering with the various search engines.
- 11 June 1996 - Web counters were installed on the homepage, archives, and organisations with pages. Counter Digits, who provides this service, has us on counters that does not record repeated hits from the same browser.
- 6 June 1996 - We were connected to the Internet via UNDP in
Jerusalem, the Internet service provider to the Palestinian
Universities. Our first hit was from a lucky browser in the University of
Missouri.
