Training

  • A presentation on : "The Provision of Information Support to Distance Learners." was held at Al-Bireh Municipality by the British Council on Wednesday the 12th of July 2000 from 9:30-12:00. Six from the Library participated; they are : Maureen, Suhaila, Gazi, Asad, Aida, and Diana.

  • Mr. Labib Eid / Head of Information services has attended a course on : "Marketing Information Services," which was held in the British Council - Ramallah from the 21st until the 24th of June 2000.

  • A workshop on "Microsoft Word" was held in the library to all staff & branch libraries on Tuesday 9/5/2000.
  • A workshop on "Advanced Email" was held in the library on Monday 6/3/2000. All library staff participated.
  • A "Workshop on Time Management" was held in the library on the 31st of January 2000. The participants were heads of library departments and branch libraries with some of the library staff.
  • Mr. Eid / Head of Information services and Library Director have engaged a study trip to Germany arranged by Geothe Institute from 19-29 January 2000.
  • Library Programmer and Library Director participated in the International Conference of Minisis users "Mum 99" which was held in Cairo from 28/11-1/12/1999.
  • Rania Barakat, Jamal Suhweil, Sami Naser and Abdel Munim Shalabi have participated in a workshop on the "Electronic library" which was held in Ramallah on 15/12/1999.
  • Library Director attended a 4 days course on Library Management which was held in cooperation with the British Council and the Ministry of Higher Education at the British Council in Ramallah from 16-19 November 1999.
  • Asad Tom from the Reference Department participated in a one day workshop held by Swets at Abu Deis College on Wednesday 10th of November 1999.
  • Miss Najla Sharabati, Miss Taghreed Shehadeh and the Library Director have participated in the Annual Conference of the Arab Federation of Library Associations which was held in Tunisia between 6-13/10/1999 under the title : "The Electronic Library and Information Technology in Libraries in the Arab Countries and the 21st Century".
  • Head of Reference Department, Mr. Labib Eid, and the programmer, Mr. Mahmoud Murrar, have participated in the course held at Birzeit by Springer-Verlag in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education, on using the Web to get fulltext data. The course was held on 26 and 27th of August, 1999.
  • The Head of Collection Development Mrs. Hadad and the Library Director attended a one day workshop on "Open Learning and library services " which was held in the Polytechnic Institute - Hebron in coordination with the British Council on on the 27th of July, 1999.
  • The Library Director, attended a one day workshop at al-Quds University on the 12th of July 1999 on using the Chemical Abstracts through OCLC Electronic Services.
  • In June 1999, three Minisis courses were held at Birzeit University about the new version of the system using windows environment : 2 preliminary courses and one advanced. Participants were from the main library and other branches plus librarians and computer people from other universities and institutions in Palestine. The trainer Mr. Terry Gavin / the System Director from IDRC-Canada.
  • Suhaila Abu Ghdeib & Iman Abdallah have participated in the Symposium on School Libraries which was held in the Ministry of Education in Ramallah on the 15th & 16th of March 1999.
  • Mahmoud Murrar / The programmer in the library has participated in a two days workshop on the union catalog which took place in Birzeit University on the 22nd & 23rd of February 1999.
  • In coordination with Goethe Institute & the International Relations Office, a seminar was held in BZU on the 16th & 17th of February 1999 entitled: "Planning and Design of Library Buildings". Participants were professional librarians and architects from the West Bank. All professional librarians and Heads of Departments in the library have participated.
  • The Library Director Mrs. Diana Sayej-Naser has participated in the followings:
  • A 3 weeks International Program on "Information Highway" in the United States through USIS in Jerusalem from 3-27/8/1998.
  • An International Conference on "Disaster and After" in Bristol-Britain from   4-7/9/1998 & submitted a paper on Information Services During The Intifada.
  • A Visit Program to university libraries in Britain from 8-10/9/1998 and the British Library Association.
  • Library director and Head of Reference and Computer Services , Mr. Labib Eid attended a course on library management which was held in the Ministry of Higher Education between the 18-20/6/1998 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Library director, Mrs. Diana Sayej-Nasir has participated in the workshop entitled " INAUGURATION OF THE ARAB UNIVERSITIES LIBRARY AND INFORMATION NETWORK " (Arab Link) which took place in Amman - Jordan on Wednesday May 13,1998. The workshop was held in coordination between the World University Consortium (WUC) and the Association of Arab Universities (AARU).
  • Musa Nasir , Taghreed Shehadeh and Nahida Nasir attended the " 5th symposium on libraries in larger Syria " which was held in Damascus-Syria between 16-22/5/1998.
  • A course was held in the library entitled : "Indexing and using the Thesaurus" , Eleven staff members participated in the course which took place in the library conference room between the 4th and the 9th of May 1998 , after which the participants were honored official certificates.

    Last visits

  • Mr. Wim Van der Putten, and Mr. Kevin Ward from Swets Blackwell have visited the library on Tuesday the 4th of July 2000 and discussed future plans and co-ordination.
  • Mrs. Suhair Khoury - British Council - Ramallah, and Mr. Richard Weyers - Regional Co-ordinator for Middle East and North Africa - British Council- UK have visited and toured the library on Tuesday 11th of July 2000, They met with Library Director and Head of Collection Development & dicussed future cooperation.
  • Dr. Karl Neubauer, Director of Bielefeld University, Mr. Bernd Fehling, Computer manager in B.U. have visited the library on Monday 10-04-2000 with representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education and met with Vice President of Academic Affairs, Library Director and Head of Reference and Computer Services in order to discuss ways of offering access to their Electronic databases.
  • Miss Erica Lang from Book Aid International, and Suha from the British Council have visited the Main Library on Thursday 11th of November 1999, and met with the Library Director, Head of Collection Development and the Acting Director of International Affairs to discuss their future contribution to BZU Library and its branches.
  • Dr. Wust, the Director of Geothe Institute in Ramallah and the new coordinator, Mr. Michael Stilkenboom, visited the library in September 1999 & discussed the on-going cooperation with Birzeit University Library.
  • August, 23,25/1999: Mr. Ray Lonsdale from the school of Library of Information Science in Aberystwyth - Wales, has visited BZU Library and met with the Director & the Vice President of Academic Affairs to discuss the possibility of introducing a library program/School in Palestine.
  • Mrs. Cornelia Ropke, from Geothe Institute - Tel-Aviv, has visited the library and arranged for the Bookfair of October 1999.
  • Mr. Terry Gavin, the Minisis System Director, from IDRC/Canada, visited Birzeit University Library and trained the library staff on using the new version of Minisis (version 8). This was from the 14th until the 29th of June 1999.
  • Ms. Lucy Hayter, from the friends of BZU in Britain visited the Main Library on the 19th of May 1999. She met with the Library Director and discussed the future contribution of BZU friends to the library.
  • Two German representatives from the publishing house of Springer-Verlag, Erika Neubert and Gertrand Griepke have visited BZU library on 4th of May 1999, and met with the Vice President of Planning, Presidents' assistant for International Relations and the Library Director, in order to help developing the collection, the staff & the electronic resources in BZU library.
  • An Australian Professional Librarian has worked in the library as a volunteer, 20 hours a week in the different library departments for a duration of four months from February to June 1999.
  • Monday 2 November, 1998: Ms. Patricia Doucette: a Canadian Professional Librarian, working as a volunteer at Al-Quds University,visited the Main Library and met with the Library Director & Heads of Departments and had a briefing about  how things are functioning in the Library.
  • Thursday 29 October, 1998: Ms. Lucy Hayter, Coordinator from Friends of Birzeit in the UK, visited the Main Library and met with the Library Director. Ms. Lucy has arranged several book donations to the University.
  • Tuesday 27 October, 1998: Mr. Dermot Englefield, a Parliamentary Consultant visited the Main Library with Mrs. Liana Quaider, the Head Librarian of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The purpose of the visit was to acknowledge the technology applied in the library and the references available in the collection.
  • Monday 12 October, 1998: Mr. Wim Van Der Putten / Area Sales Manager from Swets Company, visited the Library, and met with the Library Director,Head of Collection Division and Vice President of Academic Affairs and discussed the issue of Electronic Journals & Renewals of Periodicals for 1999.
  • Two Librarians, Nancy Sack and Sibylle Mittelsdorf, from Northwestern University Library, U.S.A. visited the Library on Monday, September 21st, 1998.They met with the Library Director, Head of Collection Development  Division and Head of Cataloging & Classification Division.
  • Mr. Wim Van Der Putten / Area sales manager from Swets company has visited the library , and met with the library director and the head of collection department to follow up with the periodicals ' subscriptions. The meeting was on Wednesday , July the 1st ,1998.
  • Ms. Karyn Pomerantz , a librarian and Public Health faculty member at the George Washington University , has visited the library and the Community Health Department on Monday the 29th of June 1998.
  • Tom Johnsen from the University of Bergen / Norway has visited the University Library on Monday 4th of May , 1998 and met with Dr. Baker/Vice President of Academic Affairs , Mr. Marwan Tarazi / Director of computer Center and Mrs. Diana Sayej-Nasir / Library Director. They discussed basic issues concerning a proposed plan for applying high technology in the library in coordination with the Library of Bergen University.
  • Mrs. Sara Andeen / an American Library Association fellow has left Birzeit University back home on the 30th of April 1998 after spending a duration of 8 months in Palestine . Her major task was to assist Birzeit University Library in developing a plan for integrating electronic resources into its collection.

 RECENT SERVICE:

SCANNING:

   Library patrons may scan any (image or text) for a fee of 1.5 NIS for each file (if they want to scan {save on disk only} without colored printing), or a fee of 5 NIS for each file (if they want to scan and print colored images).


RECENT APPLICATION:

    The Library began to use a circulation Software, starting from the beginning of March 1999. This will help library employees in giving the library patrons a better, more accurate and a faster service.

Any Library Patron who exceeds the due date of returning borrowed book(s), will be subjected to a fine.
