PRISONER DIES IN JERICHO PRISON

June 17, 1997

Mr. Hakam Subhi Qamhawi died on 16 June in the Palestinian General Intelligence’s Interrogation Center in Jericho, ostensibly from a heart attack.

There have been conflicting reports concerning the cause for death. LAW conducted an independent investigation, with the following results:

1. The deceased was imprisoned 12 days before his death. 2. Medical checks show that his death was caused by a severe heart attack. 3. The family of the deceased assured LAW. that there were no signs or traces of torture.

LAW reiterates its position of keeping a medical team on hand in all prisons to provide treatment when needed for the prisoners, and to be able to respond to medical emergencies like that of Mr. Qamhawi. LAW also demands that all prisoners undergo a medical examination on being admitted and released from the prisons.
