The Birzeit University Student Movement
at Birzeit University gives high priority to the incident which took
place on campus and emphasizes the following:
1. Birzeit's Student Movement bears the complete responsibility for its role in the peaceful rally and the boycott of the French Prime Minister's visit to Birzeit University and expresses the fact that he was unwelcome on campus following his statements which contradict the international legacy and the French position towards the Arab-Israeli conflict.
2. The events which occured contrary to a peaceful nature were not pre-planned and do not express the opinion of the Student Movement. These events were the result of an irresponsible reaction to the general student feeling that Jospin does not respect the Palestinian nation and that he did not express the minimum of what is expected from French policy.
3. We, the Birzeit Student Movement, stress our strongest denial of what has been reported in the media, describing the event as an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Jospin. The Palestinian people and its pioneering student movement rejects any attempt to undermine the relations of solidarity between both Arab Palestinian and French nations.
