Integrated into the university's globalisation process is an understanding of the importance of international co-operation and teamwork. Birzeit University has a number of significant projects which involve bringing academic and technical skills from the international community into the university to benefit the development of the local Palestinian community. Some examples, not necessarily listed in order of size or priority, are: the Institute of Law developed in co-operation with the governments of France and Qatar; the Food Quality Control Unit in the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences developed in co-operation with British Universities and NGO's and funded by the British government; a new graduate program in water engineering planned and implemented in conjunction with a number of Dutch Institutes and funded by the Dutch government.

The University has academic relations with a number of universities abroad for the purpose of joint research, guest lecturers, and faculty / student exchanges. Among these universities are: University of Deakin (Australia), Free University of Brussels (Belgium), Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), University of Ghent (Belgium), Carleton University (Canada), University of Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Paris VII (France), Montpelier III (France), University of Orsay (France), Aix-En-Provence (France), University of Bremen (Germany), International Center for Theoretical Physics (Italy), University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), University of Bergen (Norway), Autonoma University (Spain), Umea University (Sweden), Durham University (United Kingdom), Calvin College (USA), University of Missouri (USA), Villanova University (USA).

In addition, Birzeit University is linked to more than a dozen universities through the multilateral Palestinian-European American Cooperation in Education (PEACE) program, and the MedCampus and MedMedia programs.

Every August since 1981, the University has offered international students the opportunity to join Birzeit students by working on different projects in the Palestinian community.

The workcamps last for two weeks and offer students the chance to visit various parts of Palestine, as well as the opportunity to participate in valuable agricultural, landscaping and building work, all organized by the Community Work Department in the Student Affairs Office.
