Brief Information
There are two main cafeterias on the Birzeit campus. One of them is in the Main Cafeteria building and is intended to primarily serve students. The second cafeteria, located in the Science Building is intended for faculty use-although students and faculty regularly mix in all three cafeterias. In addition to these three cafeterias, Birzeit has several smaller cafes which offer light refreshments and snacks.
The University's Azeez Shaheen Clinic offers free medical services to the University community (approximately 5,000 staff and students). In cases of extreme emergency, referrals are made to several of the numerous specialists in nearby Ramallah.
This is the main University library, and was constructed in in 1985. It maintains a collection of about 100,000 books, journals, and reference materials in Arabic, English, and other languages. About 60% of these are in English. The library contains 850 periodical titles, 200 of which are current. Cataloguing is done using the Library of Congress system. Card catologues have neen replaced by a computerized MINISIS system and the Library contains several personal computers that are connected to the internet for student and staff use.
Branch libraries are located in the Institute of Law, the Center for Research and Documentation of Palestinian Society, the Institute of Community and Public Health, the Development Studies Center, the Women's Resource Center, and the Institute of Archaeology.
The Public Relations Office provides campus tours to over 5,000 people each year. The office additionally publishes newsletters, press releases, and short reports and information booklets in both English and Arabic. .
The University campus has both volleyball and basketball courts, and a football field. Students regularly hold competitions with other educational institutions and Birzeit faculty members. .
The Birzeit Computer Center was established in the early eighties as a service center in order to provide technical computing services to the University community. Over the course of the past several years, the Center has evolved significantly into an Information Technology (IT) Center, offering services to the University as well as the Palestinian community at large. Aside from taking on the BZU website project, the Center has offered several day long seminars and training workshops on internet access and design.
