ASHTAR Theatre - Jerusalem and MARALAM Theatre- Zurich
Adapted from the Novel by Hanan Al-Shaykh

Four women's lives interweave through a limbo of alienation, sensuousness and cruelty in the Arab desert, where beauty or intelligence are a trap ... and where each struggles vainly to safeguard their inner truths from the age-old path of male-imposed order. In striving to realize their individual identities, each of these four very different women evolve a strategy for personal survival:

SUHA
is determined to go back home
TAMR
fights for the right to education
NUR
uses her blatant sexuality to cover her loneliness
SUZANNE
a bland American housewife, searches for adventure

Women of Sand and Myrrh features a cast entirely of females - 4 Palestinian actresses who dare to 'unveil' the taboos and restrictions that exist both within, and without, the production.ASHTAR Theatre, has joined forces with MARALAM theatre to create a production that is a frank but sensitive cultural dialogue of the persisting divisions and differences between Men and Women (the women are portraying men from their own perspectives), East and West as well as East and East (the Mashrek and the Gulf). The result is a production that is as relevant to the West as to the Arab world, as important for men as well as women to see and consider.

Featuring: Iman Aoun as SUZANNE, Tahani Salim: NUR
Munira Zureiki: TAMR Faten Khouri: SUHA

Forum Theater is an interactive kind of performing based on the Theater of the Oppressed by Augusto Boal. It works as an awareness campaign and an alternative form of discussion, and reaches out to all levels of society in all parts of the country. The show is interactive in that the audience can stop the performance at any point in the play, directing characters from their seats or taking over the role on stage, to create new solutions to the problems portrayed.
ASHTAR has, since the start of its very successful series of Forum Theater productions, called Abu Shaker's Affairs, in 1997, made one production every year dealing with hot and burning issues in the Palestinian daily life. Abu Shaker's Affairs is based on real-life stories collected from the audiences we met the year before and research carried out on-site at villages and community groups we are introduced to by our cooperating organizations. This years three main topics are child labor, the handicapped and incest.

The framework that we are using for Abu Shaker's Affairs is a realistic - although exaggerated family setting consisting of the family head Abu Shaker - the Oppressor - and members in his family needed for the chosen themes.
