Brecht’s Week
1998 marks two important milestones for theatre in Palestine, 50 years of the Nabka - the forced emigration and dispersal of Palestinians following the 1948 war - and 100 years of Bertolot Brecht. From the 15th to the 23rd October, 1998, ASHTAR, in association with the Goethe Institute, will be holding "Brecht’s Week", a celebration of the works, and contributions to theatre, of Bertolt Brecht. As well as productions there will be films, poetry readings and photographic exhibitions. If you have any ideas, would like to stage an event in participation with us, or are holding a Brecht celebration yourself, we would be very interested to hear from you.
At ASHTAR we will be performing our adaptation of " Fluctlingsgeshprache" (Meditation of a Fugitive), translated and adapted by Sameh Hijazi. This Brecht story deals with innumerable issues - personal, political, social and historical. Brecht possesses a unique ability in dealing with these issues; using the commonest words to express the deepest of thoughts.
Sameh’s Adaptation
" My Palestinian story is not far from this. The two characters meet in an oriental coffee-shop somewhere in this world. Their personal histories and Palestinian experiences are the principle motive for a Brechtian type dialogue".
" Wars and military conflicts - erupting as a result of a whim of politicians or military men - are disturbed by civilians, making it necessary either to annihilate civilians or stop wars entirely. Each of the two men is looking for a country where virtues such as patriotism, search for liberty and goodnaturedness, are essential. Both decide that one should be armed with extreme courage, yearn for absolute freedom and be devoid of selfishness."
Brecht week events will be held at the ASHTAR Studio in Ramallah. Our production of 'Fluchtlingeshprache' will be touring the region during and after the week, in both Palestine and abroad. We are still looking for funding for this project, in order to reach our target and make the most of this exciting opportunity.
