Al-Haq Granted Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC

Al-Haq, the West Bank affiliate of the International Commission of Jurists-Geneva, has been granted Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Al-Haq may now designate official representatives to the United Nations headquarters in New York and the United Nations offices in Geneva and Vienna.

With this special status, Al-Haq will continue to protect and promote Palestinian human rights and respect for the rule of law utilizing UN mechanisms. Al-Haq now has the obligation to participate in and contribute to every relevant UN conference and meeting in order to seek to promote and enforce international human rights standards in the Palestinian Territories and areas still under Israeli Occupation. This Special Status afforded to Al-Haq will provide some of the platforms necessary to contribute to the development of a democratic Palestinian civil society in the Palestinian Territories and a halt to human rights abuses carried out by the Israeli and Palestinian Authorities

Al-Haq is celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the first human rights organization working in the West Bank. All of those who have contributed to the years of lobbying, legal analysis, research, networking and campaigning have been acknowledged and given credibility at the international level with this special status. We wish to thank all of those who have supported us and those who continue to support us in the advancement of the promotion and enforcement of human rights standards. We look forward to our continued cooperation.
