HELLO EVERYONE, I HAVEN'T CHECKED OUT THIS WEBSITE IN A LONG TIME. BUT I'M GLAD THAT EVERYONE IS STILL KEEPING IT GOING. AS I WAS LOOKING THROUGH THE COMMENTS I REALLY THOUGHT THAT ATHENA SAHOURIEH'S COMMENT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO READ. SHE SAID THINGS THAT MOST YOUNG ARABS BORN IN AMERICA DON'T THINK ABOUT, AND I AM FOR ONE GLAD THAT SOMEONE TOOK THE TIME AND WROTE SOMETHING TO KEEP US THINKING ABOUT HOW MUCH WE TAKE FOR GRANTED IN THIS COUNTRY . THE REASON I THOUGHT HER COMMENT WAS VALUEABLE IS BECAUSE WE DO TAKE A LOT OF THINGS FOR GRANTED IN THIS COUNTRY. I WENT TO A PLAY THE OTHER DAY AND THE KIDS THAT WERE IN THIS PLAY WERE KIDS FROM PALESTINE THAT ARE IN REFUGEE CAMPS, AND TO SEE THE WAY THEY ARE TREATED WOULD BREAK YOUR HEART. IN THE FIRST SCENE THEY HAD A JEWISH GUARD BRING IN A YOUNG PALESTINIAN BOY, TIGHTED UP, BLIND-FOLDED, AND BEING TOSSED AROUND LIKE A BALL. I WANTED TO CRY JUST BY SEEING THAT. I'M NOTICED ONE DIFFERENCE ABOUT THE KIDS THAT WERE BORN IN PALESTINE AND THE KIDS THAT ARE BORNIN AMERICA. KIDS AS I WAS LISTENING TO THE KIDS IN THE PLAY, THEY SOUND LIKE THEY WERE TWENTY AND THIRTY YEARS OLD, WHEN THEY WERE ONLY ELEVEN AND TWELVE. I THINK ITS VERY IMPORTANT EVERYONE KNOWS WHERE THEY CAME FROM. I FOR ONE LOVE TO HEAR STORIES ABOUT PALESTINE AND TO HEAR THINGS MY PARENTS DID AS YOUNG CHILDREN THERE. ( I LOVE ESPECIALLY TO HEAR ABOUT KIDDY-CORNER). I THINK MORE KIDS SHOULD TAKE THE TIME AND ASK THEIR PARENTS ABOUT HOW IT WAS TO LIVE IN PALESTINE OR WHEREVER THEY MIGHT BE FROM. TO TELL U THE TRUTH I COULDN'T LIVE IN PALESTINE KNOWING THE I WOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH CHECK-POINTS AND TO REALLY HAVE NO FREEDOM IN YOUR OWN HOME, JUST AS ATHENA STATED. BUT I GIVE THE RESIDENTS OF PALESTINE ALL THE CREDIT IN THE WORLD. IT'S TOUGH AND I HOPE IN YEARS TO COME I WILL BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO OUR PALESTINIAN PEOPLE AND TRY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. SO I ALSO URGE ALL YOUNG ADULTS TO GO WITH THE FEDREATION TO PRJECT HOPE. THAT PROGRAM IS THE BEST PROGRAM I'VE SEEN. THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING AND ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. ATHENA I THANK FOR BEING THE ONE TO RAISE THIS ISSUSE AND I HOPE THAT EVERYONE ON THIS WEBSITE THINKS ABOUT THAT SHE SAID. SHOUTS OUT TO MY FAMILY, JUJ, FUSS, SHUGGAH, CUZ, LOLA,RKSWEETGUY, BASIMA, CRYSTAL, DETROIT DEBKA TROUP, LOVE YA. ...... PLOBUDTA

YA HALA - I am happy to see this website and wish more Arabs and others will use it for better purposes than to say hi to their friends, whom they can email privately. FOR ATHENA SAHOURIEH -I AM ESPECIALLY EMPRESSED WITH YOUR VALUEABLE COMMENTS AND POSITIVE THINKING FOR MAKING A REAL EMPRESSION AS PALESTINIANS. TOGETHER WE CAN UNITE IF WE FOCUS ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR BOTH THE AMERICAN BORN AND PALESTINIAN BORN. MY CLASSMATES AT THE UNIVERSITY READ YOUR POST AND ALL ARE VERY HAPPY THAT FINALY A PALESTINIAN IN AMERICA THINKS OF SOMETHINGS OTHER THAN LIFE IN AMERICA. YUKH'Ti, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SHARING AND PLEASE KEEP UP AND INCOURAGE MORE TO BE CONCERNED OF THE NEEDS AND IMPORTENCE OF REMEMBERING WHERE YOU ARE FROM AND ALSO WHAT WE (living here) PUT UP WITH. God bless you all and with love from JERUSALEM! Issa

Marhaba and hello to all Arab Americans all across the USA. When united together, we could have a HUGE voice in the political affairs of America, however if we remain silent about the many injustices against Arabs here and in the Middle East, it makes our situation as a people worse. Please pressure your state representatives to STOP all aid to Israel as well as to push for the immediate removal of all criminal and zionist sanctions on Iraq. All Arabs living in America, whether Christian or Muslim, whether Palestinian or Lebanese, whether Egyptian or Syrian, whether Iraqi or Moroccan; we are all ARABS! We need to work with one another and defend Arab interests with one voice as opposed to individual and weak voices that go unheard. To all that have always worked in the interests of the Arab people, keep up the great work and encourage others! Go and invest your time and money into Palestine or atleast go and visit, I plan on going myself next spring. I would also like to propose setting up some sort of national fund raising organization that would collect millions of dollars from Arab Americans each year if each adult could donate $25 a year into a fund devoted to the reconstruction of Palestine just as the Jews did with Israel in the 40's and 50's. I know for sure that Palestinian American adults could easily donate $25 each per year and if not, you are further betraying your country and people. There are many Arab Americans living in America who are sucessful and financially well off so there is no excuse. If anyone supports such a fund, contact Arab American organizations and encourage them so that we can provide REAL results to Palestinians living there instead of empty promises.

To Jan: Go to our Federation Home page and click on the flashing icon "books and publications", and the list for the Ramallah History books will pop up. The books can be ordered from the Federation. The original Ramallah people are Christians but the majority of the people presently living in Ramallah are Muslims. No we have no BAHAI FAITH in Ramallah, but we do have them in Palestine. Mostly in Hafia. Project Hope is an on going project of the Federation and it is in its 4th year.

MHH-Thank-you for the history of Ramallah. I am also interested in the resource you have given on family trees and will pursue that further. In my own efforts, I have recently found some people who speak Arabic and am excited about learning a few phrases. What is the current main religion of Palestine? Do you have people of the BAHAI FAITH there at all? Also, your idea of Project Hope sounds beautiful.I hope you all learn much and have a ton of fun. God Bless us all. ATHENA-I enjoyed very much reading your message.

Regarding project hope, I agree with Deena- I would love to be able to participate in project hope, but it would only be possible if it were right after the convention. This is the best way not to interrupt school and we would be able to extend the stay if we wanted to and not miss the convention. Also, I like the idea of seeing other places like Lebanon- I've heard so much about it but have never had the chance to go- But I feel the trip wouldn't be complete without a trip to Egypt. I know many of us would be interested in seeing the pyramids. So if you could take this into consideration when making plans I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Brothers & Sisters - Marhaba and thank you in advance for taking the time to read this. *** ENERGY *** what's it all worth? Simply by being in this section of the website shows that you are concerned and maybe even committed to keeping 'alive' our Ramallah heritage. What an awesome way of connecting each other! Shouldn't we use this to display our positive energy? We have power in numbers that seemingly is only used in having a successful Convention. Can some of that enthusiasm and energy go into pending issues that we all face such as living as a Palestinian in this country and facing the see-saw effect of the homefront obligations and traditions compared to the schoolfront and American mainstream interactions? Do our parents really know how difficult it is to grow up in this country? Do you talk to them about it? Do you share your fears and ask for support or do you fear their reactions and hide from their old-school ideas? Do you honestly know about your Palestinian roots - how can you help our PALESTINE? Start by helping yourself. Learn about what the big picture is and not focus on the little picture. You know of people who spend their efforts talking about others and wasting time in this precious life disrespecting someone to make themself look better. In God's eyes we are all equal. Wherever you were born, whatever you do, however you look and whatever you own. ** Energize ** Your blood is Palestinian - Youth and young adults back HOME like you are struggling for basic rights that we take for granted. If you're actively reading and submitting to the guestbook, surely you are old enough and wise enough to use your own ENERGY and make an honest difference. It's a reality we live in - Please think about it. What if you weren't in this country and didn't have the freedom to walk or drive to school or work without checkpoints - imagine carrying your passport constantly and always taking detours to get to where you need to go. Imagine being treated like dirt simply because you are who you are. Imagine a world other than your own. Forget your name, your car, your home, your checkbook - you are PALESTINIAN and if you weren't proud, would you be here? Do you even know what happens with Palestinians in this country? DO you know your rights in this country? Do you care to know that some of our Palestinian brothers may be DEPORTED - as in thrown OUT of this country - for excercising the right of free speech? Think of how many Arabs there are in America - and we still haven't reached minority status? WHO are you really? Are you going to let your Palestinian pride fall through the woodwork of the American floor or will you rise and paint each wall with red, black, white and green. Reach for more outside your own walls. Ask questions, be aware that a very deep and rich culture can't afford to let us sit down and pass by. Involve your mind and find out more about who you really are and what YOUR people in Palestine and America really are going through. You're not alone - for every question there is an answer. So what can you do? Start by listening and opeing your mind. Together, we can unite and make a difference. Blood can not survive if it's outside a body. A ymind cannot thrive if it's inside a bubble. I appreciate your time and apologize for the length of this post. I strongly believe that our tomorrow can look promising if we focus in on what's important and stop tredding the shallow waters. God bless you.

In regards to the "project hope" trip- I have heard so many positive things about this trip but I know a major concern about the trip this past year for the youth was that- the dates fell during the school year. I think quite a few youth would be more interested if it was schedueled around the school year.

Regarding Project Hope: We are planning a trip to Ramallah and the region next spring. This trip is being planned with the youth in mind. The intention is to learn about the history of the Palestinian struggle. We will travel the region and visit Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. You will have the opportunity to meet the people and the leaders who have been fighting oppression all of these years. Although, we will be doing a lot of serious business, rest assured we will have plenty of fun as well. We have not finalized the details yet so we are open to your input. All those interested in making this type of trip please contact me ASAP. Spread the word to those who do not visit us here in the guestbook, they may be interested as well.

Okay, I have recieved many emails regarding the convention. Instead of sending tons of emails, i will just post all the information right now, on here for everyone to read. The name of the Hotel for the orlando convention is the HILTON. The address is 1751 Hotel Plaza Blvd. P.O. Box 22781 Lake Buena Vista, Fl 32830-2781. I will post the phone numbers but here's a bit of advice, CALL THE 800 NUMBER DURING DAYTIME HOURS, IF YOU CALL THE HOTEL DIRECTLY, THEY WILL TELL YOU THERE ARE NO AVAILABLE ROOMS. The reason why they would say this is because we booked the hotel privately. So call the 800 number for your own benefit during daytime hours. The # is (800) 782-4414. There are already 600 booked rooms, and we've only reserved 800. Not to worry, i know there is much concern about not getting a room. We ARE booking 2 other hotels. There are a strip of hotels on this road...we are booking 3 total! SO not to worry, we have plenty of space. More information to come at a later date. SIncerely yours, Miranda Bateh

Hello, I just started medical school at UC San Francisco and I am trying to plan a trip abroad for the summer of 2000. I am hoping to work with organizations that provide assistance to underserved people in Palestine and elsewhere in the Middle East. I hope to find doctors at a clinic that would be willing to work with me on planning this trip. I know that many of Palestine's needs, including health needs, often are ignored. I want to change that. My father, Raja Rafidi, is Palestinian, living in Youngstown, OH. My mother is Jordanian, of the Sweidan family. I live with her here in San Francisco. I have been searching the web lately trying to find contacts to begin to plan my project, and I found this site. Any information or advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Please email me. Also, a happy hello to everyone on this site! It gives me such pride to see us represent ourselves with solidarity!!

Since the Jacksonville club doesn't have an e-mail address, I wondered if someone could answer a question about the convention of 2000. Does the Ramallah club of Jacksonville have more than one hotel booked for the convention? We recently called and they said that our group had only about 4 rooms left with our pricing plan. So if you could please let us know, I would appreciate it.

The Ramallah people trace their history to Jordan, we were a Christian family. The story goes that a wealthy individual in the area wanted to marry one of our daughters. Our great grandfather, (with many other G's) could not refuse him but did not want to marry his daughter to a Muslim. He took his whole family and moved across the Jordan River and took up roots in Ramallah. It was the year 1550 when Ramallah was first settled by Rashed Haddad and his family, then and our extended family began. Suggestion: order a book from the Federation Web site about the family trees of Ramallah by Aziz Shaheen it has our history and family trees. You might even find your name on your family tree. I am not sure about our history before then, but I will look into it and get back to you.

Hey everyone, what’s up. I’m just chilling out here in Honolulu Hawaii for 2 months for work and I have notice that there isn’t much Palestinians out here. Wish all my cousins from Virginia, Chicago, Kentucky, Michigan and everyone else could be here with me. I tell you guys what, raggie is a big thing here and the music is good. Imagine Arabic raggie would be some good stuff…..haha. Well, if there is anyone that is thinking to coming to Hawaii for a vacation, do it. It’s so beautiful over here and you do so much. The clubs are good, the music is good, and the scenery is amazing. As for Nejad and he’s quest for a international holiday for he’s birthday, “ he’s got my vote”. Well, I guess I have to get back to work. Drop me a email and I will respond to you asap. P.S I will represent how us Palestinians party to the fullest. PEACE OUT…AND SALAM. To Jan Norman Well I guess I will take the teen question too since I fall in that category. I do think that some of the teens have a lack of knowledge for how lucky we are. Our fellow Palestinians in the Old Country don't have it so easy at times. I do not see anything wrong with enjoying ourselves at conventions.....in fact it gives us a reason to love our culture being in that sort of environment with other Arabs. However we do need to open our eyes to the others out there like us who don't have what we have. I have much love for my culture and with that I empathize with the children in war. Maybe the teens who haven't grown up yet will one day have some appreciation. FOR MHH.......do you know where exactly the Ramallah people were before they settled there....I've read that they were in Yemen before 5 A.D...do you have any other information? Thank you.

I completely agree with you Jan. As a Palestinan in my 20s who has traveled to Palestine and seen the suffering of the people there, I notice that American born Palestinians are becoming more apathetic. Conventions could be so much more than what they are. People prepare for conventions by going shopping so they can dress to impress and party all night long. Unfortunately I have been there myself. What snapped me out of that lifestyle was actually visiting Palestine and seeing the sadness and despair in the faces of young and old Palestinians. They don't have the freedom to go to other cities surrounding them, they don't make enough money for the basics like food and clothes, let alone fancy cars and designer clothes like they do here. They want so badly to get an education and many times that is denied them too. When you get sick here, you can go to a doctor, but medical care is scarce over there and many times people can't afford any insurance. So when I came back here to the States and saw how all the young people just cared about showing off their material wealth, I became upset. All I can say is to all you young people out there, you have so much potential. Take a trip to your homeland and WAKE UP! You will learn so much and all of a sudden, stuff like BMWs, night-clubbing, and Tommy Hilfiger clothes don't matter any more.Do whatever you can to stay connected to your people. I have talked to them myself and they all feel betrayed by Palestinian Americans. They feel we don't care about them anymore.Remember this as you get yourselves ready for convention. Hopefully this year's convention will have activities where you can get involved. This is the one time of year where everyone can work together and have a good time as well!

Ramallah, PALESTINE - Thursday, September 23, 1999 at 13:09:40 (PDT)

Jan Norman Rockville, Md USA From MHH 1. It is a Palestinian custom that the oldest son would name his first born after his father. All males and females have their father's first name as a middle name, but once the female is married, she takes her husband first name as her middle name. In some Palestinian cities all the sons would name their first born after their father. 2. Are Palestinians considered Semitic. Yes (I will give you a detailed history next week) 3. Yes at times it seems we have two different generations of Palestinians living in this country. Our young people are proud of their heritage and when it comes to Palestine they all pull together. But you have to understand they are young and have been influenced by this country's social activities "good or bad".

Are they any traditions or customs in the naming of Palestinian children? For instance, is it common that a son would be named for the father-twice or usually takes the father's middle name? 2. Are Palestinians considered Semetic(sp?) because they are also Middle Eastern?I hear anti-semetic as hating a jewish person but aren't there several countries and religions in the semetic region? 3. The Palestinians suffer in Palestine. I was able to talk to a few young people there via IRC once. They seemed so wise beyond their years. Then I see this site and the young people slang their language, talk endlessly of partying and I wonder if they know how children and young people of war feel or even if they try to know. So, this next question goes out to the teens who write on this page what do you do to try to understand people who live with what we see on the news, is happening in Palestine or do you just live your lives for yourselves and the next convention you can party your heart out too?(NOthing wrong with partying, mind you) I just get the sense "some of you guys are totally clueless) to a world beyond your own. Sorry to annoy anyone but this site does go out to the whole world. Thanks for your help with answering some of my question. Peace. Jan

Many of you are concerned over Disney's depiction of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Disney has responded: ORLANDO, Fla., Sept 17 (Reuters) - Walt Disney World said on Friday it will go ahead with an Israeli exhibit that angered Arab and Muslim groups, but said the display at its Epcot Center theme park would not depict Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Brothers and sisters--here is the latest update on Disney: Arab League contemplating Disney and Burger King boycotts (IsraelWire-9/13) Members of the Arab League met in Cairo on Saturday where they discussed the possibility of boycotting the Walt Disney and Burger King Corporations. The 22-nation Arab League has expressed its disapproval over the opening of a Burger King branch in Maale Adumim, which it considers "occupied Palestinian land." This despite the fact the burger giant has already acquiesced to the pressure and threats and ordered the store closed. It appears the closing of the store may not have been enough and some Arab ministers are in favor of the boycott to teach the hamburger giant a lesson for having opened the store. The Arab League also informed the Walt Disney Corporation that it found the portrayal of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel objectionable in the upcoming Florida Millennium Theme Park. Despite the release of several statements by Disney explaining its decision and distancing itself from the political arena, the Arab League is remaining adamant that representatives in the US be permitted to examine the exhibit prior to its opening to the public. Arab leaders have not made any attempt to hide their recent threats of economic sanctions against Disney, with a UAE statement speaking of boycotting "lucrative Disney interests in the Middle East." Senior officials in the PLO Authority (PA) have stated it was not acceptable for Disney to portray Jerusalem as the capital of Israel since this was an issue to be determined during the final status talks scheduled to begin at the Erez Checkpoint on Monday evening. The issues with Disney remain unresolved at this time but the Arab League and the UAE remain firm in their position that if Disney insists on moving ahead with the exhibit, the international Arab boycott will begin.

To My Fellow Brothers and Sisters... As we all know, convention will be in Orlando Florida next year. As we are planning next year's festivities, Disneyworld is planning on opening their new exhibit, titled "Jerusalem, the capital of Israel." It is important for us to let Disneyworld know that this exhibit goes against international law. Jerusalem is still disputed territory, and until that is settled, Disneyworld has no right to make such an arrangement. This exhibit is political, and there is no room for politics in a family-oriented amusement park. Make sure to let Disneyworld know of the Arab presence in this country--so far many Arab nations have threatened to boycott all of Disney's products. The Ramallah Federation has a powerful voice as well, and considering our convention will be there next year, we should all make our voices heard.

What a better way to bond, have fun, and give the Palestinians a voice than to have a demonstration at Disney World. We need to get some media attention for this event. If America does not hear what we have to say ,then we will fail our beloved Palestine. You see how the Jews have the audacity to even place Jerusalem as the capital of Israel at Disney World. While they have parties and celibrate Israel's anniversary, we just sit back slowly forget about Palestine. It is up to us, here, in America to keep Palestine alive. So, what will it be? You decide.

Hey Everybody, just wanted to say hi. And i knot this is a really irrelevant thing, but can somebody please change the picture on the main page. Its nice and all, and good job to whoever drew, but i though that the PHOTO of Ramallah made the site look a lot better. I mean its been up there for a while, so i think it needs to be changed to something else. I even think an old photo of the Friends school in Ramallah would be cool. Anyway so that is my 2 cents. I will be looking for the change. See you all at the convention.

I read statements and messages on the AFRP every week and the funny thing is I know alot of the people who are writing them, however I just wanted to say a few comments about recent events in the Arab World, specifically Libya. (I am an Arab engineer so I thought this recent event might be of interest to other Arabs as it definitely was to me!) This week in Libya during the OAU festivities, a new sports car was unveiled by the very progressive Libyan government. The government contends that all manufacturing, design, prototyping, and serial production have been and will continue to be solely undertaken in Libya. This is a FIRST for the Arab World. The car is loaded and equipped apparently with all kinds of new and revolutionary safety gadgets as well as the usual leather seats, sunroof, and cell phone found in many luxury cars these days. Next year, according to the chief Libyan engineer, Dukali Mugherief, the Libyan government plans to mass produce at least 1,000 cars a week for the eventual sale to Europe and the Middle East, and one day even, the United States! This is a GREAT technological accomplishment for the Arabs as a whole and to me, events like this should continue throughout the Arab World in order to modernize and industrialize our Nation and people. By the way, did anyone know that the CEO of Ford Motor Company (the largest automotive company in the world) is an Arab? His name is Jack Nasser. Anyway, the Arabs must catch up with the West and Japan when it comes to manufacturing and engineering development and hopefully one day, they will be the leaders in this technology. History shows us that we can be in that position once again as we were for many centuries. Events like this one in Libya are long overdue, however, one must remember that a few other Arab states within the Arab Nation including Iraq and Algeria have been on this path for a while. Today is a great day to be an Arab and lets all continue to progress further even more!!

Hello all i have not checked the guestbook in a while but i was reading up on some stuff and i mean common guys do you really think all the convention is is just having fun and parting? well just to let you know as a member of "the youth" its not i love the conv. not to only have fun but to also charish the bonds of our people OUR RAMALLAH PEOPLE ya know isnt it great!? were from ramallah! i am proud! and at the conv. we have a very good chance to come together from all over the U.S and share this special bond we have, so in conclusion lol i do not think that we should dwell on how our youth only go to the conv. to party and blah blah blah (no offence to any aunties and umos) and dwell on more importaint things like teaching the ramallah traditions to the youth, cuz you know what guys WE ARE THE FUTURE!!!!!! OK EVERYONE THANK YOU LOVE YOU BYE

In response to some comments about "our people" rather wanting to party in place of fighting for our rights: It's not a question of partying or fighting for our rights- its more or less two totally different sides of our federation trying to be merged into one. Why can't we keep the social aspects of our federation- ( the convention) separate from our political side- (the disney dilema)? Both are of equal importance to keeping our federation strong but there is a time and a place for both. I happen to believe that we should support both yet do so without leading to further problems. i say this meaning that bringing the two together in orlando would only cause many problems for all thoes who have put a lot of time, effor, dedication, and love into making the 2000 convention rememorable.
