Melinda, the Mid Year Meeting is going to be in Michigan in the year 2000, Correct me If I am wrong but I beleive the dates are February 18-19. We hope to see you there. MARY, as I have said before in a previous coment I left for u. I too am in a similar stuation as you are in. But when you say you and your family are active members and the people at your local club did welcome u and you love then dearly then that tells me the feeling that your have of not feeling welcomed is something you should have to work out with yourself. It seems that everyone else has tryed to make you feel welcomed but you are not seeing it. I'm seriously not meaning to sound rude or anything. But the information Miranda has stated is VAILD, and she never said YOU could not be a member. she clearly stated that "only those from Ramallah could be active members in their local club, on voting issues, member activites and thing like that". Well since you are a member of the Ramallah communtiy because of the fact that your mother is from Ramallah, then you are a member. So you can do things like that and no one ever said you couldn't. I am also sorry you feel like you aren't welcomed into the Ramallah family. Because you shouldn't feel like that. Sincerly, Jennifer

Hi guys. Seems like the issue of "being from Ramallah" and "not being from Ramallah" comes up way too much in this guestbook. Is there some sort of guideline to being from Ramallah? (Example:If only your mom's grandma's uncle's daddy is from Ramallah, but your dad's grandpa's auntie's mommy isn't from Ramallah, then I'm sorry, your not from Ramallah).I'll quit the sarcasm..but come on you guys...give it up.This issue of "being from Ramallah or not" is getting ridiculous.

Mary, if you wanted to prove some sort of point, then why didn't you just say so. How old are you anyways??? Writing on a website asking for peoples opinions, then trying to "prove some sort of point" later on is not what this guestbook is intended for. I'm sure I can speak for a lot of people when I say everyone is welcome into the club. But on issues such as what I was speaking about, I know from first hand knowledge. Maybe its different in your state, but here, that is how our club run things. So before anyone tries to contradict someones valid information, I advise those to do some research. No pointing fingers and no pun intended. I'm dropping this issue, and leaving it at this. Again, I apologize for trying to respond to your original addition to the website. I was simply trying to be nice. As I always do!! ~~Much Love to my PLObudta,Lola hunny, Tina, and Sophia!!! Yall are my girls ---Peace out: Miranda

Miranda Thanks you for "trying to be nice." Also, thank you for proving my point. I am an ACTIVE member in my local club, and I do VOTE on ALL issues concerning the club. My sisters have also been on the board and they have held positions such as secretary etc... The members of my club and community make me feel very welcomed and I love them all dearly. Yet, think about why a small part of me does not feel welcomed? Its because of comments simular to yours, such as; that I can not be an active member in my local club. Im sorry to say that is not VALID information, because Im living proof. Im not only proud to be a Palestinian but I am also proud to be from Ramallah. Also, I never said that I felt "out of place" those are your words(or Edward Saids) not mine. By the way that is a very good book, I had no idea that it has been nominated for The New Yorker Readers Choice Adward, Thank you Betty for the website.

Dear President Misleh, With all due respect, your sincere Christmas letter regarding strengthening our ties to our homeland totally contradicts itself. If it is true that Project Hope will be during the school year again this year, I would like to express my great disappointment into what Project Hope has been focused towards. If it is still intended for the youth to return to their parents' homeland to experience what their culture comes from and to give back to their heritage, then by all means these dates (April 19 - May 4) do not represent that. However, if it's geared towards "young adults," -- that meaning recent college graduates -- then I think Project Hope is only half-fulfilled. I agree that these young adults should be a part of it in order to give back to their community by employing their skills. However, you say for your self that "everyone must be involved;" moreover, your mention that "we are lucky to have so many opportunities." Who is "we"? You grown-ups? You grown ups who've probably either immigrated to the US or grew up with parents who are immigrants? Well, the times are different...there is a new generation out there: probably barely speak Arabic, probably only see Ramallah through their grandparents' eyes, and probably believe they're American, instead of Arab-American...trust me, i know. With more and more Ramallahite teenagers lacking the Arab values our parents and grandparents have tried to instill in us, it is the most crucial time for them to let them see for themselves what their culture is all about. Project Hope was one of the most amazing times in my life;not only did I experience what life was like, but I've also grown more aware of my heritage and culture. It breaks my heart that you are denying this to others my age. I've told so many other youth my age about this program and how wonderful it is...now they're as disappointed as I am that they have to wait until they can afford a 3 week paid vacation from their work. I will try everything in my power to have Project Hope postponed until August, and I think my father, George, will listen to me. And, Please don't tell me that the logistics will be very hard...because I know they aren't. Sincerely, Paul George Saba

With all due respect Mary...You have exactly what I say correct. I was trying to be nice to you...I felt as if I was. If you feel out of place, well then, I'm terribly sorry. But everything I said in my guestbook entry was VALID information. If you feel that I'm wrong...well then I'd like to clarify things with you. Only those FROM ramallah could be active members in their local clubs. ON voting issues, and member activities and things like that. With the holidays fast approaching, it is important for us to take note of all the good in our lives. We are fortunate to live in a country with so many benefits and freedoms. We are lucky to have so many opportunities. We are most fortunate, however, to have the capacity to realize that we have the best of two worlds we have all of the benefits of living in the United States but, more importantly, we have all of the benefits of being Palestinians. As Ramallites, we have a strong and important heritage. We have tradition and custom that will forever enhance those of our adopted home. Most importantly, we have the ability to make sure that we keep these ties to our homeland strong. Through commitment and perseverance to this cause, our lives, and the lives of our children and grandchildren will be full of promise. Our future is tied to our past; appreciating where we come from, learning from what we've been through and wanting to move forward are all key to our success as a people. It is my hope that as we enter the new millennium we will all come together young and old, men and women to strengthen our already strong links to our homeland. Everyone must be involved. We cannot make things better without input. Please be involved. A good way for you to do this is to join me on my Project Hope Trip this spring. The dates for the trip are April 19 through May 4. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to see your homeland; whether it is for the first time or the hundredth time makes no difference. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a joyous New Year. Husam Hanna Misleh, President American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine

Lora Eadeh-comment on your 11/27 message and my last message to you. The Washington Post article is from 12/17/99 pg. A4. The Palestinian woman pictured is an activist named Sumaya Farhat-Naser. The name of the conference was "Women Waging Peace".110 women were present at the conference. They are a "global link aimed to shape policies". It is encouraging and comforting to see the women's wish for peace in their lives can transcend the wars, and hatred they have grown up with. Courageous.

Lora Eadeh-response to your 11/27 message. Excellent comment about how the middle east needs feminism. You wonder if it will ever happen. A conference recently took place in Boston, Mass.Think it was called Women Making Changes. They have started their organization up on the internet. They are women from all over the world especially war areas and they got together to discuss how to put humanity back into the lives of their families and land. I saw the article in the Washington Post about two days ago. The picture showed a Palestinian woman speaking to the crowd. I will have to try to locate the actual name of the conference but it is the same name of their organization. They encourage women the world over to open dialogue and try to bring about Peace in their lands which includes addressing the issues of degradation against women. Peace.

Miranda when you say, "... only that person from Ramallah can be an active member." What do you mean by that??? I can never be an active member, because only my mom is from ramallah and my father is not??? If a Ramallah man marry's a woman, who is not from Ramallah, she can be an active member, and her children can also be active memebers, yet if a Ramallah woman marry's a man who is not from ramallah her husband and children can not be active members?????? Is that what you are saying? With all due respect if that is true, where do you get this information from?

Mary, I totally understand what you are going through. I'm in the same situation as you are in. My mom is from Ramallah but my dad is from Alquds. Even though they're both from Palestine and I'm 100% Palestinian I use to feel sorta the same way. I never grew up around any Ramallah people. I only started knowing them about 4 years ago. But when I first started joiing the Ramallah club I felt the exact same way u do. But as I starting knowing more people and becoming active in anything the Ramallah club and the Federation had I felt more welcomed. I don't know how it is in Cali but I know sometimes here in Mich the younger and older people tend to stick to clicks that they have. The only have things for the same people and never like to include new people. But they don't mean it. Trust me Mary they are not going to judge u just because your dad is not from Ramallah. You can join any Federation and your local club activities just as long as your are from Ramallah in some sort of way, like Miranda from Jax said in her comment. But it doesn't help when your not active. I don't know active the club is in Cali but if it is active I tell u the best thing u can do is join in and have fun, start going to the conventions, any parties they have. Cuz you will meet people from all over and even become close to a lot of them. Hope it works out for u. If u need anything u can always E-mail me at PLObudta@aol.com. Shouts out to Shuggah, Lolaaaa, Juj, Fussfuss, Big L, Shorty, and all my firnends from all over. Hope to see you guys either at the Mid year or the Convention. Love ya Butta

Happy holidays everyone. For those that are into Palestinian music, check out this web site http://www.phelesteen.net/songsoffreedom This is a great collection of Palestinian songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Please note that a large percentage of what is earned from the CDs goes for a not-for-profit and NGO, the Palestinian Hemophilia Association (http://www.phelesteen.net/hemophilia), This organization is concerned with hundreds of blood disorder patients in our beloved Palestine, who are handicapped and dying because of lack of expensive medication and medical support. So your purchase goes towards a good cause, and rebuilds the emphastructure of our Holy land. If you wish to donate to the PHA without purchasing the CD, please e-mail me and I'll be happy to direct you on how to do so as well.

Mary, I can't understand why you feel that way. I know you may have your reasons but... The Ramallah Family, regardless of where you live or who you marry, if ONE parent is from Ramallah, then that person and the whole family should be welcomed with OPEN arms to any club. The only difference is, only that person from Ramallah can be an ACTIVE MEMBER. If your local Ramallah club is making you feel uncomfortable or somewhat cold shouldering, then it is an issue you should address to the President of that organization. Whether your min Ramallah through the mother or the father side, your are always welcome! Don't ever feel that your not. I hate to hear that. Email some of us on here...I'm sure that you will get a better understanding of the Ramallah Family and what we're here to do, not what we're here to not to do. What we are not to do is disclude anyone! I hope what I said makes you feel more comfortable. Hope to hear from you soon Miranda Bateh =)

Hello to all. I wanted to notify members of our community of a unique chance we have to increase Arab-American visibility in the United States. Edward Said's memoir "Out of Place" has been nominated for The New Yorker Reader's Choice Award for Nonfiction. I believe this is the first time a narrative about being a Palestinian has attracted this much acclaim and attention. You can vote for "Out of Place" by going to the website http://www.surveyplace.com/tny/ It takes less than a minute to complete the survey. This is a quick and easy way to support the members of the Arab-American community's artistic and intellectual achievements.

Diane- I totally agree with your comment about Arabs being so concerned on what people will say...well in this situation- the parents were worried about people talking about their daughter who-gasp... God forbid- talked to a guy- well NOW we are all talking about them killing their daughter- lets think about that one. Diane- I think that's a great topic of discussion-how far should we really worry about what people will say when we make our decisions in life- these "people" we are worried about is often times- our own Ramallah family. I would love to hear what everyone has to say about this one. I personally think our concern for what others will think should be extremely limited. We should spend more time concerned with making ourselves better people rather than trying to please those who don't even know the circumstances of our lives for any basis to judge us on. But I'm really interested in hearing what others have to say. Pat- I think an exclusive chat is a great idea!

I beleive a year ago or maybe more, there was actually an organized Ramallah chat on AOL. And I still have it on my favorite places, but people just stopped going. Or the ones that would go there were the trouble-makers. Just spread the word around that there is going to be one up again...if enough people want it.It seems easier than the afrp Ramallah chat .Later-- S.A.

Hey, this is to all the people who are on AOL. Instead of us all going to different generic arab chats, I think someone should organize certain times if the week to have Ramallah chat on AOL. As i am sure anyone who had aol knows....it is very user friendly when it comes to chat rooms. I would do it myself, but i dont have the time. I tried going to that Ramallah chat organized by the federation and no one was ever there. I think if the aol Ramallah chat were done properly, it could be big. So who wants to do it??? IF no one does....nothing gained nothing lost. See you all at the convention.

Hey guys..I don't know, I just can't believe that the parent's weren't even concenred about their daughter. That's what's wrong with arabs today...they always worry about what people have to say and how you've disgraced the family. YADA YADA YADA!! You'll always here talk regardless if your good or bad. These people lost their daughter all because she spoke to some guy. Honestly, how dumb does that sound. It think it's selfish on the parent's part b/c all they really cared about was themselves and losing respect from others. Well there goes my 2 cents lol. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving. Later guys.

I agree with Caring from ohio, it is one thing to joke around about women like most men do in the arab culture EX: women should not work just cook and men just make the money but it is just not right to take it that far to take the life of a human being over somthing so samll like talking to guys even if it was worse and she was sleeping with them or whatever she should just be talked to or mabye taken away form thoes people well i guess some people just dont think things through and that is what gets them into trouble. I belive that these man should be put in jail and sent to a shrink! mabye that will straighten them out this is just my 2 cents i dont mean to offend anyone but if i did then i am sorry and please let me know. Thank you. P.S i agree with Pat, Paul, and Deena they have a good "PLAN!" LOL.

I agree-this guestbook needs a nice heated argument- what if I were to say I agree with what happened to the girl who was murdered for her innocense? Would that get people going? Maybe- but dont worry, I'm not. I have a question for thoes of you who know about this case- what ever happened to the murder/fiance of this poor girl? What ever the foreign tradition may be,Honor killing or not- here in the United States we like to call these situations COLD BLOODED MURDER!! I really hope justice was served here and that such people will shed their extreme ignorance and end this peverse violence.

To Caring- and all others who agree. It is a shame that happened and I realize the parents don't want to disgrace the family name, but to me..it seems like the family name is already disgraced and the person(s) responsible for disgracing their name is the parents themselves. No concern for the daughter???? Well, to me, that just seems like disgrace alltogether. What kind of family is that? God be with all those who suffer tragedies like this. And to the family who disgraced themselves--Allah Ma'ak. Cuz yall are gonna need Him! To Caring, I do agree with you....and what you have described sounds like an honor killing where the family feels disgraced by their daughter so they think if she is dead, they would be better off. I hear this happens quite commonly in some areas of the Middle East. I hope that these people can open their hearts and minds.

This goes to "caring" from Cleveland, Yea I heard about what happened to Methal, she was sort of an acquaintance....it is sooo harram, she was also engaged to the person who killed her. Her parents didn't care one bit. That's only one case of a woman being murdered because she supposivley harmed the family name, women in the middle east, are brutalized and subjected to shocking treatments every day because of their natural desires. While men can indulge in polygamy, the woman is condemned to absolute truth. I guess thats the way it goes, feminism is the only thing that will get these women equal rights, doubt that will ever happen.

I have great news! I just spoke with my father regarding the unfair dates of next year's project hope (april 15-may 1) and he informed me that Project hope will be in early August!!!!!! Since he is the travel and accomadations organizer, he knows what's up. I'm really glad it has been changed, otherwise i would've raised HELL at the convention! To anyone who is interested in participating: DO IT!!! It is a trip you will never forget!!!!!!! I joined it two years ago and it has changed my life! I plan to join it this year since Lebanon is on the itinerary!!!! If any of you have any questions, feel free to email me! (p.s. i agree with pat....let's get some controversial topic in here: the peanut..it's neither a pea nor a nut...discuss amongst yourselves...)

Here is something that I would like to here some opinions on....I believe it was last year when a young 19 year old girl died on the cold streets of Cleveland. The girl, Methal Dayem, was murdered by her cousins. They were upset because she had brooken an engagement off with one of them. The boys said that she used to hang out with other guys, which they did not like. Altough i believe these boys are guilty and should be jailed, Methal's parents don't feel the same way. When the boys were taken by the police, Methal's parents stood outside the courthouse with signs asking to free there nephews. What really upsets me is that they killed her and no one cared. They were too busy worring about Methal being a disgrace to her family because she talked to boys. What kind of people are they? Do they not have a heart? Do they no care for their dead daughter? Am I the only one who feels so strong and disgraced by these acts of violation? If I have offended anyone i apologize but I just want to know how others feel.

We are a Palestinian/Arabic Folklore Dance Troupe seeking to make cultural bridges around the world and to remind our fellow Arab Americans that even though they live abroad from their original home, they shouldn't forget their culture and heritage. We would like to encourage others to get involved in the Arab community, whether artistically, politically, or religiously. Visit our website to learn more about us, and if you live in the Houston area, then you may be able to join us in our mission to revive the Arabic cultural spirit. Good luck to all, and God Bless.

I think it's really unfortunate that project hope will take place during school time. I was really looking forward to going back home this summer and it's really sad to hear that project hope will have to go on at a time when most of the youth, whom this project is primarily intended for, will not be able to attend. anyway allah ma3koom and have a great trip

Patrick, I agree with you. This guestbook is just something people look at when they are bored, it's not like it use to be. Maybe there is something we can do to make it better. Anyone with suggestions, write the guestbook with them.

Can I just say, and this isn't meant to be a negative comment, but this guestbook just doesnt have the drama it used to have. People used to come and debate valid topics over this guestbook. And sometimes tempers flared, but it was always in good fun. There was such a wide variety of opinions, it was always fun to read. But now, well it seems that so much vitality has been lost. Oh well, i guess thats the way it goes.

For the many who emailed me re: IBDAA' and the Dheisheh website - the correct and accessible site is www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/9836/dheisheh/index.html IF for some reason you can't connect -do a web search from most engines under "DHEISHEH." Enjoy and thanks for your time.

Hello and Marhaba to all Ramallah Americans as well as all Arab Americans in general. This website has become a great success for the AFRP, however more needs to be done in order to encourage the newer MTV and internet generations to become involved in AFRP affairs. Otherwise it will all be forgotten and lost for good. To all the young people under 21 out there, become active in your area. Help your local club in doing fundraising or party/meeting planning. To all that have done so already, keep up the good work!
