May & June 2001 Guest List

Hello and Marhaba to all fellow Palestinians and Arabs in the US and around the world. The heroic and courageous Palestinian struggle will never end (and will intensify further) until Palestine is fully liberated and free of the zionist filth that came in from Europe. The whole world did not want the yahood, so they threw them on us Arabs. This is not a religious war as many in the Western media seem to imply in their jewish controlled media. Rather, it is a war of Arabs (both Christian and Muslim) against the jews who came in and took the land by force from the native Arabs (I am a Christian Palestinian myself). The yahood who live in Palestine will live miserable lives as long as they remain there and this will never change. Wealthy Arabs in America and around the world need to do a lot more to send aid and weapons to the PA in order to kick out all yahood who have lived a good life off of our backs. The yahood settlements are the ultimate symbol of imperialism and colonialism and they must be burned to the ground and removed immediately. Have a good time at this years convention in California. We cannot continue ignoring our conscience by living a good life here while our people back home suffer. Make a difference and send aid or volunteer yourself! LONG LIVE PALESTINE AND LONG LIVE ALL ARABS WHO FIGHT FOR JUSTICE AND FREEDOM!!!

Hi- I'm not Palestinian, but I am an American journalist doing her Master's thesis on the Right of Return, planning to go to Ramallah in August or September. I am specifically trying to talk to Palestinians here who have family in Ramallah, or who know people who were living here in the Bay Area and have chosen to live in Ramallah--even under the current conditions. I am looking at the good and the bad of going back, what it means to stay, and to return. I am especially interested in any non-traditional stories, anything of particular courage, (or not) you get the picture. I have already written a piece for the Village Voice on the excessive use of force by Israelis against Palestinians ("Shoot to Maim," part of a group project) and have spent a lot of time studying Palestinian issues. Although I am traveling July 5th, I would like to attend the first day of this conference. If anyone in the Bay Area would like to talk to me before this time, however, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm trying to find good people to talk to both here and in Ramallah. I think that most Americans think of Palestinian refugees as people living in tents with nothing to lose, and I hope to shake that notion a bit- Looking forward to meeting you. Give me a call at 510-849-4311, or just respond to this E-mail. Many thanks, Jessie

Marhaba! I would like to make a comment about the convention's registration. I recieved in the mail today (June 19, 2001)the registration forms which states that the deadline of registration is June 20, 2001. I was wondering if the deadline will be extended since we are just now receiving the information packets and registration forms.

This is a letter I received please take up the call to make our voices heard -we need to voice our view to the media!!! As you know, Palestine Media Watch (http://www.pmwatch.org) has been hard at work for the past eight months pushing the mainstream media to include more pro-Palestinian voices in their stories and editorial pages. Some progress has been made, since we are beginning at long last to see pro-Palestinian rights voices slightly more frequently, but a great deal of work remains ahead. Many who have pressured the media for years to bring about equitable coverage and give adequate voice for the Palestinian perspective may feel that the battle is futile. True, the battle is nasty and long drawn, but we at Palestine Media Watch feel that we have no choice but to fight on: We believe that our only alternative is constant criticism, a constant supply of alterantive voices, and, perhaps even more importantly, a steady accumulation of hard and contemporaneous evidence that the media is engaged in willfull, irresponsible conduct contrary to its stated professional ethics. And so we turn to you: in our meetings with editorial boards of the major East Coast papers -- NYTimes, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Boston Globe -- we have been told by the editors that they are more than happy to publish more pro-Palestinian pieces if they are provided with some. Of course, we are taking the excuse with a heavy grain of salt, but we are taking it as a starting point to make some inroads into the pages. Since we are scheduling more meetings with them in the next few months, it is vitally crucial for our effort to be able to say that we provided them with X pieces and they published only a fraction. If we meet with them next time and we have not provided them with enough pieces, they will feel vindicated and will use the episode anytime anyone criticises them for the imbalance. Even if you are certain that your piece will not be published, please make the effort to submit it to us so that we can keep a careful count and chalk up how many we turned in and how many they turned down. All statistics, in addition to the reasons they will offer us for turning down the pieces, will be carefully recorded and published in due time. We simply want to strip the media down out of all its excuses, so that we can take the next step. So: I plead with you -- please provide us with opinion pieces on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that are around 800 words in length and we will submit them on your behalf for publication to all the major papers. We have dedicated teams for the NYTimes, the Washington Post, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, and many other contacts with dozens of other papers around the country. The understanding we have reached with the editors is that no publcation can go forward unless and until the final-final draft is cleared with the author. Please send your essays to me at: ahmed_bouzid@yahoo.com To read Palestine Media Watch's reports on the media, please visit: http://www.pmwatch.org/pmw/reports

I agree with Angie from Chicago. That was also the issue at the last San Fransisico Convention. I know the Level Up Parties are great and something you don't want to miss. But the purpose of these conventions are to unite us as one family and to take us away the final night defeats the purpose. These conventions are becoming to much about parting and not enough about uniting. Maybe you can move the Level Up party to the night of the $70.00 boat cruise and forget the cruise. That way all young adults who want to attend Level Up and still want to attend Banquet the final night can. Young adults really should be attending banquet night and listening to the speeches being made about the federations future. We are the future and will be taking over soon.

The Level Up party in some respects is equivalent to the Grand Banquet, expect it is catered to the young adults(21+). Besides not everyone will be able to fit in the grand ball room. Also, the location that the Level Up party is at, is remarkable and unique, it should be saved for the last night!!!!!

I WAS JUST WONDERING WHY THE LEVEL UP PARTY IS ON THE SAME NIGHT AS THE GRAND BANQUET? MOSTLY EVERYONE ON THE LAST NIGHT WANTS TO STAY IN THE HOTEL, NOT LEAVE THE GRAND BANQUET! CAN SOEMONE SWITCH THE PARTY TO A DIFFERENT NIGHT?

In response to some of the comments regarding prolonged registration hours; at this weeks meeting 6/12/01 I will bring up the issue in order to do just that. In regards to comments about the prices, believe us, we would probably break even at these prices, it is extremeley expensive for these events when you figure buss service, food caters, services provided. However, I will mention the concern regarding FAMILY DISCOUNT, that is what it's all about after all. I will get back to all of you. and you can always check www.ramallahconventin.com I will try and put an update box in there. Thank you Michael Nader Musleh

Just curious: Does anybody know if anyone from the San Fransisco community who is on the convention committee is reading the guestbook. The concerns and comments you guys have are the same one's many of us have. I see concerns from the San Fransisco community posted here, however I don't see any comments from anyone in San Fransisco to help ease these concerns. I just wanted to know if the messages are getting to the right people.

I am hoping that the prices at the convention are profit for the poor children of Ramallah and nearby cities. I know everything is expensive, however, as the earlier people have said, it is impossible to enroll all of your family members. There should be a discount family price or something. I know prices have been set, but if you want people to attend your events, try to give a better cost price.

SAN FRAN, CA USA - Wednesday, June 06, 2001 at 15:16:22 (PDT)

I agree with the previous comments about the cost for this convention being outrageous. I thought the reason for these conventions was to unite us and keep us as one family. But with the prices these days, for those who have family's of more than 2 people you are actually pushing us away. And we are what should become the future of this federation. But a couple with young kids trying to make it can't pay these prices to unite. We have no other choice than to take our family vacation else where, where it would cost us less than half of the price of the convention. We would love to come to conventions and remain a part of the Ramallah community; but appartently these conventions are only for the rich. And unfortunatly that we are not.

I agree with some of the comments made by the two people from Houston, registration should have extended hours for at least the first day. As for the $70 boat cruise, for 4 hours, well I dont think it is worth it, what if you dont like it and your stuck there for 4 hours, now if its an open bar then maybe the price is worth it, if not you might end up spending $100 to ride on a boat for 4 hrs. As for the $35 fashion show, why pay the money just walk around the hotel, it will be a 4 day fashion show!!!! The level up party sounds great though......

This is the first convention i've been to in a while where this is the case. Any explanations? By the way, I am looking forward to coming and seeing everyone!

Hello, I was just wasting time on the computer and decided to see if there was a website for ramallah, there was under middleeast.com. It took 5 minutes to download this page. There was nothing there about israel, interesting, so i decided to go to israel.com. It took 3 seconds to download the page. This ticked me off. Anyway, I am looking forward to being in the convention this year.

Hi, I was reading the outline of the events planned for the Ramallah convention and it sounds pretty impressive..but I have one point to make though...Its sad that non of the planned events involve or took into account what is happening in Falasteen now to our country and people..no political discussions or sessions to discuss and teach the younger generation of Palestinian and arabs about their homeland and the unjustified situation happening right now in our homeland..I hope to see some discussions taking place as to what each and everyone of us can do to help or to contribute to our homeland and our people.

My only concern is having events planned for the not so old not so young crowd as in 25-35 year olds...I find that most of the events planned are moslty for teenagers or older adults..nothing for us the inbetweens :) anything good happening for us the lost folk??:) Take care and hope to see y'all in San Francisco... adios from Canada. After reading the final convention itinerary we were quite disappointed with what we saw. Many people are unable to attend due to the high cost of airfare on the 4th of July holiday. However those of us who have chosen to attend, are shocked by the outrageous ticket prices. They seem to be ridiculously higher than any other convention we have ever been to, causing many of us to think twice about participating in the scheduled events. We understand hosting a convention is costly, but ya'll should take into consideration the amount of money already being spent by the attendees. Some of the concerns that have been addressed are: (1) The boat cruise for $70 (2) An extra $50 for Level up, after having to pay full registration (3) $30 S.F. tour (Are there not going to be complimentary shuttles to show us the highlights of your city?) (4) Is the wine country tour really $50?? I just wanted to make you aware of our concerns.

We thought karaokee night was an AWESOME suggestion.. & it's also FUN!!! Arabic music is also awesome but we need a change in pace. It's original, it's funny, and everyone will be involved. We don't have to karaokee to American songs, we can jam on to habibee ya nour il 3ain anytime!!! But whatever... it's only a suggestion... take it as you wish.

On the Israeli tourist office web page, they asked for comments about travels to Israel. Here is the text from an Email I wrote about our trip in 1993. In the letter, I refer to friends we met while we were in Jericho. I want to find out if they are healthy and to get word to them that we hope they are OK. They lived in Ramallah when I last spoke with them many years ago. Is there anyway to get word to them? Thank you. Mark Wiggin Email sent to the Israeli Tourism Commission...or some similar organization>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It was a great trip: we met wonderful Palestinians from Ramallah--a woman and her husband who wanted nothing more than to have a child, earn a living, and live in peace without being harrassed by your army and the settlers. I hope they are still alive and that your government has not yet bulldozed their house under the guise of deterring terrorism. I will never again come to Israel-- that is until you stop killing innocents and destroying the Palestinian people's towns and infra-structure. Learn from your own history and negotiate a peace treaty as equals with the Palestinians. That is what I learned from my wonderful trip to Israel and the West Bank. Regards, Mark Wiggin

I am writing to you on behalf of the Palestine Monitor ‡ an Information Clearing House (for more information go to www.palestinemonitor.org). The Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO) set up the Palestine Monitor in order to convey unified responses about local developments from the perspective of civil society, particularly given the present crisis in the Palestinian territories. Another aspect of the Monitor is our Media Watch group. Palestine Media Watch Group The Media Watch Group is an all-volunteer group of international students, Palestinians, and local professionals. The main purpose of the MWG is to monitor major Western media and to respond to any detectable bias, racism, inaccuracies or outright lies printed in some US and European press, and broadcast through TV and radio stations in those countries. The core of the work in the group is to respond to media bias and inaccuracy with direct, clear, and accurate information, which cannot be refuted, to guarantee credibility and effectiveness. We also aim to reach as many as possible of the international journalists who cover this region in order to direct them towards and inform them on the realities, and steer them away from using Israeli pre-packaged language, views, and terminology in reporting the events taking place at this time. I was forwarded your names as concerned individuals, who are aware of what is happening in Palestine now and would like to invite you to join our Media Watch Group. What this means is once or twice a week I will send you an article that requires a response, the address to respond to and a short analysis of the problems in the article ‡ the rest is up to you. It is not very time consuming, and the difference it can make to the bias of media cannot be underestimated. Please respond to this email as soon as possible to let me know if you do or do not want to be added to our Media Watch Group. PLEASE READ, VOTE AND PASS THIS LINK ON TO ALL WHO BELIEVE THAT THE ISRAELIS ARE USING EXCESSING FORCE AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS: On April 26, there was a link to a Netscape poll on whether Israel is using excessive force against the Palestinians. At that time, the poll stood at 25,944 votes for YES (50%) and 26,944 (50%) for NO. Later on that same day, the YES vote exceeded the NO vote by about 10 percentage points. Today, however, the poll stands at 321,053 votes for YES, but the NO votes have jumped to 1392910! The current percentage votes stand at 19% for YES, and 81% for NO! It is obvious that a vast effort has been mobilized to tilt the balance in favour of the NO vote.. For what it is worth, here is the link for the voting site.... pls. use the following link to vote: http://home.netscape.com/ex/shak/international/packages/mideast/

Hi all. I'm so excited that I found this website. I can't wait till the convention; I've never been before, but have always wanted to go and meet more family! Berkeley's sure a hot spot of Arab political activity right now (well, when is it not?). There's been several demonstrations, rallys, and protests fighting for Palestine. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much understanding or cooperation with the Iraeli students, but we'll never stop trying!

Are we going to find out a schedule, or any information about the convention before we get there?
