Hi everyone. My family is from Ramallah; from the Dar Awad family. I was born in Washington D.C. in 1947, and visited Ramallah in the summer of 1963. It is so amazing to think that most all of us here who signed the guest book are related in some way. After reading your notes, and remembering many of your sir names that linger in my mind, I have this wanting urge to meet all of you ... to see you ... just to be with you and share together the feelings our families before us once felt. Maybe e-mailings can be a substitute for enjoying the personal touch with our relatives. I am a Amateur radio operator (HAM radio operator) and just found out this week that the World Communications Conference assigned the radio call prefix, E4, to Palestine. This is good news as it shows the individual identity of Palestine. Take care, and may we enjoy meeting each other and finding how we are related, and to whom we are related. Our Blessings and love to all our Ramallah families, Joe and Peggy Saah

Great sorrow at the passing of King Hussein ibn Talal ibn Hussein of Jordan. He shall be greatly missed. Although I did not always agree with his policies, I have always respected and admired him as a wise leader of all Arabs. My heart goes out to the people of Jordan and peace-loving people throughout the world. I also wish to offer support to new King Abdullah II. May his reign be as long and prosperous as his father's, Inshallah.

As a Palestinian American I want to take this opportunity to express my grief for the loss of one of the most prominent rulers in the Middle East, King Hussein. The world weeps over the loss of such a wonderful leader. I am touched by all of the support that Jordan has gotten by many leaders around the world. It gives me chills to see Israel, France, England, Palestine and many other countries flying their flags at half mast in honor of King Hussein. Although his death is hard for us to deal with, we must be optimistic and pray that this new era will bring the best for all Arab nations. Peace and prosperity will one day become a way of life in the Middle East.

I am so thrilled I found this web site. I am an Arab-American living in Ca. I was just in Ramallah this past summer with two of my children. This was my kids first trip to Ramallah. I must say that this was their most enjoyable trip. They had a blast, they didn't want to come back to the U.S. When we did return my daughter told her father she wanted all of us to move back to Ramallah and live there forever. This trip had such an effect on my 6 year old daughter so when she was asked to write a book report about a special place in the world, she wanted to write about Ramallah. That really makes me happy that I took her to see it and I encourage everybody with young children to take them also. It was much different than when I lived there. This is a great web site. Keep up the good work. One last thing, I would like to wish my cousin SUHA BABA, best wishes & good luck on your marriage to RICHARD ELIAS. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!!!! I LOVE YOU, NAJWA BABA

Palestinian Soul ------------------------------- Several years after taking out Canadian Citizenship, A Kuwait-born, Palestinian origin Canadian - at times I still find myself brooding over the issue of my national identity: How Canadianized have I become? What is a Canadian? Am I a Canadian? Where do I fit in the Canadian Mosaic? Now: a woman in my thirties, I still don't have the answers. On paper , everything seems simple, clear-cut. Nationality: Canadian. Country of birth: Kuwait. No identity crisis; no existential angst. Outwardly, the only signs of my foreignness are my name, which I've never even considered changing or anglicizing, and my accented French and English. Never once have I regretted my decision to become a Canadian. To travel to the country of my birth, where I lived for more than half of my life, I need a visa. Officially, I am not a Kuwaiti; officially, I'm a Canadian. In reality, though, I don't feel Canadian or Kuwaiti in the same way I feel Palestinian, which I realized after an absence of twelve years. I discovered that while I now inevitably see things from a Canadian perspective, I remain basically Palestinian in the way I feel, think, react. I face concerns how I perceive my place in this society and how others perceive me. To Palestinians, however, there was something foreign about me (un je ne sais quoi) that made people ask me if I really was a Palestinian. Was it my Arabic accent grown stale and dated through disuse and lack of contact with the spoken language? No: It was something deeper than this superficial sign: I was Canadianized. I do not fit, I face a sense of displacement, a feeling of isolation in what I consider home. But I still regard myself as a Canadianized Palestinian, not yet metamorphosed into a Canadian for I don't feel Canadian in the same way I feel Palestinian. A refrain that keeps ringing in my mind. Throughout the years, I've taken an active role in my Canadianization. No adult can undergo acculturation merely by osmosis, or against her will. The desire, the determination, the commitment, have to be there. It's the same with acquiring a new language. No adult can ever master a new language without a persevering, painstaking, obstinate effort - not to mention fervor, devotion, passion, obsession. In my case, both experiences have vastly expanded my horizons and enriched my life. In my quest for this elusive, mysterious abstraction - the Canadian soul I've explored the history, the geography, the arts, the literature, the economy, the political system of this country. I go on picnics on Canada Day; I wear a poppy in my lapel in November; I vote in every elections; I hold a degree from a Canadian university; I belong to a Canadian professional association (Accountants), I speak, read, write and understand French and English. I've lived and worked in QuŽbŽc and Ontario; I've tried unsuccessfully to become interested in hockey, curling, lacrosse; I watched the juno awards; I'm a fan of Canadian movies; I've traveled from coast to coast by train; I drink rye; I don't care for maple syrup; I enjoy life in Canada. I love this country and yet, notwithstanding all my efforts, the Canadian soul continues to elude me. The PALESTINIAN SOUL IS PERSISTENT : the bits and pieces that form the Palestinian culture, love and longing are permanently fixed in their position in accordance with some preconceived design, and it's this fixity, this permanence, this lack of fluidity, this foreordained positioning that separates me from my Canadianization. The coming Canada Day I will hold an olive branch in one hand and the maple leaf in the other hand, might help me in my quest for my national identify. In a lot of ways, I have had the opportunity to reap the benefits of two cultures: a heritage as rich as dynamic as the Arab's, and the material well-being of the West. Merci!

Hi, I'm a Palestinian American who has lived in SF my whole life and recently made the choice to go live in Ramallah and study at Birzeit University. For the first time in my life I have a full appreciation and love for my homeland, and my people. I've always had a hard time finding other Palestinians, so while I'm back here in San Francisco I was hoping to meet some people or get involved with something, or even when I go back to Ramallah in February. Hope to hear from you all out there, and my commendations for a great web site here. By the way, Ramallah has been looking great recently despite the frequent conflicts, and is actually more fun than ever. If anyone can give me info on something to get involved with in Ramallah as an arab-american who wants to help, please do. I'd love to hear from my fellow Palestinians.
