My name is Veronica Ramadan and I'm a working on my MA in Communications and Mass Culture at Hunter College in New York. I'm currently working on a project that examines the way in which foreign countries handle social problems such as domestic and family violence. I don't want to put this discussion on a web chatroom so that every anti-Arab or anti-Muslim nut can spout hateful comments, and am therefore emailing people directly in the hope of finding someone who would like to discuss the issues such as the ways in which women's advocacy groups use the media (both formal and informal) to promote awareness of domestic/family violence and the kinds of support, counselling and safe-havens that are available to women. I'm still framing all the issues and questions I think are important, so I may need to send several emails. Please be assured my intention is not to belittle Arab culture and society, as a woman I consider violence against women not specific to any particular culture, race, ethnic group but tied to the status of women globally. For example, here in the US over 4 million American women are physically abused by their husbands or boyfriends and that 42% of murdered women are killed by their male partners. Women are more often victims of domestic violence than they are victims of burglarly, muggings, or other physical crimes combined. Over 3 million children are at risk of exposure to parental violence each year. If you have any suggestions I would be extremely grateful. Thanks, Veronica |
