Settlements: The Statistics

In May 1999, the number of Jewish colonies in the Occupied Palestinian Territories has risen to 214, in addition to the 25 settling sites on seized hilltops. These Jewish colonies are located in Jerusalem (31), Nablus and the northern parts of the West Bank (76), Ramallah (29), Bethlehem (18), Hebron (28), Jericho (11), and the Gaza Strip (21). These figures include sites in the hearts of Palestinian cities such as Jerusalem, Hebron and Nablus. The figures do not include the 25 settling sites installed on hilltops since the Wye River Agreement. Moreover, an estimated 20 sites, previously military camps, were converted into settling sites after 1993. The Jewish colonies take up 3-4% of the total area of Occupied East-Palestine.

The number of Jewish colonists in occupied Palestine is in May 1999 estimated at 165,173, of whom 7,166 reside in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and 180,000 in the Jerusalem vicinity. From September 1993 to May 1999, an estimated 187,137 dunums of land have been confiscated for further colonisation and bypass roads construction, in addition to other service installation to cater for the needs of the colonists. The above figure does not include the land that has been sealed off for military purposes.
